AC Milan will be without Theo Hernandez for at least the game against Empoli, forcing Stefano Pioli to look into alternative solutions.
According to MilanNews, the target is to have Theo back for the following matches in which the Rossoneri will play against Chelsea and Juventus in the Champions League and in Serie A respectively.
Among the hypotheses being examined by Pioli are the idea of playing the natural replacement Fodé Ballo-Touré in that role, or moving Sergino Dest over to the other flank, and also the third idea of a formation change.
The first solution would not require tactical upheavals or movements of other players, but Ballo-Toure has only amassed 19 minutes in the calendar year 2022. The second option is to let Dest play from the first minute, but after the penalty he gave away against Napoli, there are doubts there too.
The last solution is the one that takes more time and must be better prepared as it involves a 3-5-2. In this case Pierre Kalulu, Simon Kjaer and Fikayo Tomori would be the centre-backs while the returning Rafael Leao could play on the left, with Calabria on the right.
You can tell a news story is made up when it suggest Pioli is considering Leao as a left wing back in a 3-5-2.

Think of it more like journalism sharing an opinion rather than news. Pioli has stated the team has practiced with a 3 man back line. That said given the players available it seems more like Pioli deploys Leao as a forward in a 3-4-3 with Krunic or Dest as the LW.

Tonali Bennacer Pobega Krunic play too that’s why Vranckx isn’t playing even though I think he can do good. Adli isn’t playing bcz of cdk and Brahim we do trust Brahim the issue but Adli will get time. Thiaw has Kjaer Gabbia Kalulu Tomori over him it’s very hard for him to get his spot.
