Questions have been asked about Luka Modric in the early stages of the season, but the AC Milan midfielder disproved them on Sunday.

After struggling a little against Lazio – a first for him in a Milan shirt – there were a few questions about Modric and his role moving forward in the team. But he only needed another game to ‘prove’ himself.

Modric back to his best

This evening, MilanNews looks at the narrative that has surrounded Modric since the Lazio game: that he was a problem for Ruben Amorim and his team. However, this is – as it stated in the article – ‘madness’.

Of course, he may be misused. Yet, he’ll never be the problem for the Rossoneri. Against Lecce, it was proven that he is still the heartbeat of the team, with his quality shining through.

Technically, he was a class above on Sunday and he was back to controlling the game, doing so at a pace which no one else could really comprehend. It’s a skill set that no one else possesses and it proves why he can be so key in games where the Diavolo are freer.

Against teams like Lazio, he will need more support. Alternatively, he may be tactically rested for these games to allow more able runners to come into the team. Either way, the focus must be on Milan’s organisation for Modric, rather than the Croatian’s.

After all, the club made him the promise, not the other way around…

  1. Oh my gods, the binary in football journalism.

Player has bad game; he’s too slow, can’t fit in the system, showing signs of age

Player has good game; never the problem, the heartbeat, essential, undroppable

Maybe the truth is somewhere in between lads? Some games will suit him, others won’t, he’s not at his peak but he can be useful in the squad. Is nuance so difficult?

‘MilanNews investigates the hysteria’ is rich though…

  2. Can you over-simplify it anymore?
Modric’s athleticism or lack of it is going to be a liability against some sides. Against teams like Lecce where Milan is going to control most of the possession Modric is a good choice. Against other more physical sides where Milan might be under more pressure Musah may be the better option.
Everyone loves Modric but lets be honest, he is 41 and a midfielder. That’s a problem against some teams.
