Sky: Modric now ‘one step away’ from Milan – verbal agreement reached

AC Milan are growing in confidence that Luka Modric will sign on a free transfer, and Wednesday could be the decisive day to close.

Things have moved very quickly on the Modric front. After the first links on Monday night, this has now transitioned to talks over a potential contract, with optimism growing throughout Tuesday that he might arrive.

Modric to Milan close

According to Di Marzio, Milan are accelerating for Modric. In the last few hours, the Rossoneri have received the ‘yes’ from the Croatian midfielder, who has said goodbye to Real Madrid after over a decade there.

There is now confidence that Milan will be able to get his signature by tomorrow, and he would of course arrive on a free transfer. While he cannot be the only signing in the event of Tijjani Reijnders’ sale, the management think adding an experienced Ballon d’Or winner to the squad can help.

According to Sky, Modric is really ‘one step away from Milan’. A verbal agreement has in fact been reached between the Rossoneri and the former Spurs man. The signature is missing, but within the next 24 – maximum 48 hours – that could arrive too.

Modric has just ended his spell in Madrid after 13 seasons, with 28 major trophies lifted in that time. After the rumours of Milan’s interest in the last few hours, Modric – who has been a Rossoneri fan since he was a child – could finally get his ‘dream’ move.

    1. Yes Bro
      We are seriously cooking 😂
I think instead of Firpo, we should try and get Ashley Young. Let’s also sell Santi Gimenez, Jovic and Camarda, then get Odion Ighalo and Luis Suarez.
We should also sell Mike Maignan and sign Ter Stegen. That’s a super squad for Allegri and we are set for the 2nd star ⭐⭐.

      1. While we’re at it, let’s sell Leao and Puli and bring in Messi and Ronaldo. We can then change the club name to Milan Passato. Milan Futuro and Milan Passato!

        1. Laugh all you want but bringing in Messi and CR7 would be a genius move even now. The whole football world wants to see them play together. The revenues would skyrocket and would go a long way to make Milan financially stable. I would easily sacrifice a season or two for that.

Add in Modric and add in Griezmann to complement them and we’re cooking. Also tell Messi to take Federico Redondo from Inter Miami with him too. Add Rabiot as well.

I mean $hit, imagine having all these players in their primes… that would have been a worth Milan, unlike the Suso’s, Leao’s, Bonaventura’s, Niang’s, Balotelli’s, Montolivo’s etc. of the world.

But you people cannot see anything beyond sporting results. You can’t see the benefits of having true superstars, even washed-up ones because you’ve gotten used to mediocrity and don’t remember the real Milan anymore.

          1. What a coincidence that PSG won its first Champions League the first year they got rid of all their stars and finally became a team. You can’t see beyond business.

      2. Well modric isn’t coming as a first team player we need his experience so he can help all the young players like ziroli and others too

          1. Modric is better than any player we have on the team
If we get him he will be the best transfer Milan has made since Van Bommel
            You guys are just delusional

He can easily start on a weak league like Serie A even at 40
He has one more year left for sure

          2. “Modric is better than any player we have on the team”
            – Better than any midfielder for sure. Best since Pirlo left actually. Better than any player? Well see. Could be.

“If we get him he will be the best transfer Milan has made since Van Bommel”
            – Zlatan’s comeback and Giroud were pretty great. Let’s see how this goes. It could be huge.

“He can easily start on a weak league like Serie A even at 40
He has one more year left for sure”
            – This! But saying Serie A is weak is BS as all the teams there can defend while in Spain none of them can. But he sure can be a starter each match as we only play once a week and let’s not forget how much Giroud played without getting hardly any rest with UCL matches in addition to the Serie A.

  1. Nice.
Finally Milan will have a true professional, a champion, a winner, a leader in the locker room, someone that they desperately needed this season when they allowed the inmates to run the asylum.

    1. Not to spoil your mood, but you know that Morata, then Walker were also supposed to be professionals, champions, winners and leaders ?
Will those extra UCLs actually make a difference.

      1. Comparing Morata and Walker with Modric?
Walker left ManCity to get away from his problems off the pitch. He fit right in with Theo.
Morata came in when tge season was already started and the train was already off the rails.

        1. Funny Z, I remember you being happy when we brought Morata and then Walker at first.
Modrić is an all-time great, which neither Morata or Walker are, but they, like him, captained their teams, won a lot of titles with club and country (Morata actually won with Spain) and were exemplary in a lot of their games.
Yet nothing came out of their experience, leadership and qualities so why all the excitment about a player who is going to be 40 for next season ?
You said the train was off the rails, but there are not many reasons to believe that we’re somehow going to be good next season.
In any case, he’s free, so let’s give him just 1 year with a renewal option.

          1. I was happy that Milan signed Morata for the same reason. im happy they are signing Modric. Leadership.
When i talk about the train being off the rails, im not talking about results but a bad locker room environment created by Theo, Leao, Tomori, Maignan, and Calabria, the leaders.
Most importantly, the biggest culprit of the 5 , Theo Hernández, hopefully would not be part of that locker room next season.

          2. Most of the players you’ve named (I feel like you did Calabria dirty here but whatever) will most likely still be in the locker room by next season. Allegri is no slouch in the discipline department but neither were Conceição or Fonseca. And the management is still the same+Tare, so the conditions are far from ideal.
Ibrahimović, Kjær and then Giroud did well because they came to a young team with unkown players eager to prove themselves and a direction that wanted to put Milan back among the greats. Their fitness eventually failed them but when they were healthy they were actually the best players on the pitch and the younger players could only but contemplate leaders that not only had discipline and character, but also performances that back their ambition.
Modrić will be 40 next season, older than any of the leaders when we brought them and he’ll be among wannabe superstars with inflated egos and poor work ethics. He probably won’t start every game and won’t even finish the games he’ll start. If you watched Real Madrid last season, you’ll see he was regularly outpaced and outdone by younger players. So unless he can bring back some of what he did until 2022, I don’t see how he will bring respect and admiration in a team that successfully self-destructed itself.
But I’d be happy to be wrong about this one.

          3. The locker room is policed by the players, not the coach, not some director, ceo or an owner.
Milan has a pretty young team and will get even younger. Having a champion like Luka Modric can only help. He is a huge resource of experience, leadership and professionalism. You are better with him than without him. I don’t understand the issue. It will cost Milan 3.5 million for one season and maybe another. He will be making less money than Bennacer and even at 40 he is more reliable than him.

          4. You can’t go a month without reminding everyone that you hate Bennacer huh…
I don’t have many issues with him since it will mostly be a short contract and not evey expensive anyways, but I don’t see many reasons to get super-excited about a player who is about to retire.

      2. Morata behaved professionally.
He was the biggest reason we won that first derby vs Inter.
While our overrated stars like Leao and Theo had the cooling break incident… Morata instead shut up, kept his head down and went to training.
Sending him to Gala was a mistake but apparently Morata said that he experienced something strange at Milan and he felt uncomfortable so he left.

Morata and Walker are limited players in comparison to Modric.
Plus Modric has Allegri and Tare while Morata had to deal with the horrible environment the management created becaue of Fonseca, Conceicao and the clown duo of Leao and Theo.

Morata may even come back to play under Allegri.

    2. Yes, he’s all that, but he is also turning 40 years old this September. Most likely his contribution will be more like you said as a leader and an example for the less professional Milan players, than as a player. On the other hand, he will be coming for free and can always be a super sub, playing a few late second half minutes, given his age. If we had to spend a lot of money to bring him, I’d be against it, but for free, yes, why not?

Walker was a great player but his age and physical condition made him less effective for Milan. Simon Kjaer was also a great and experienced player and a leader for the defense, but his last season, he was old and slow. So, I’ll welcome Modric on a free transfer but I prefer to keep my expectations low in terms of on-field contributions. Sure, he had 4 goals and 9 assists for Real Madrid but like Kjaer was doing quite well and then had a sudden decline his last season with us, it’s not excluded that Modric won’t repeat for Milan the success he had in his last season for Real.

      1. He played almost 3000 minutes for Real freaking Madrid this season. If he plays 1500 minutes for Milan it’s a great move.
People want Ricci, Comuzzo, Leaoni, Fazzini to be signed. They want Camarda, Liberali, Zeroli, Bartesaghi to play more in the first team. They are all 23 or younger. Who is going to be their example for how to behave, train and carry themselves as professionals? Leao? Jimenez, Gimenez, Tomori? Florenzi, who got dragged into the betting scandal by Tonali? Who?
This is a great addition for Milan, even if he plays only 1000 to 1500 minutes next season.

        1. Exactly – the team’s gone to sh*t since Ibra Giroud and Kjaer retired and we’ve been left with “leaders” like Theo and Tomori. Mike’s the closest we’ve got to a leader and he’s not even properly on the pitch…

      2. He will be gauranteed starter like Seedorf was at 35 for us.
You people are so clueless it hurts. You were saying the same thing about Van Bommel when he came.

        1. Is this a confirmation of a poor recruitment job done by Maldini or is it a spite on Theo’s ability as a player?

  2. Next step:
Bring Cristiano Ronaldo: the greatest goalscorer in football who is always eager to win since we have an attacking problem.
Sergio Ramos: one of the greatest defenders of the last 20 years since we want better defenders.
And maybe try for Lucas Vázquez.

  3. Guys, before you start complaining and crying because of his arrival, keep in mind what’s the main reason behind it. We miss a true influence in the dressing room. Someone whose voice will be heard and respected. We lost this with Ibra & Kjaer and it’s a first time since they left that we will have a strong character. He’s not coming here to play 90 minutes. He will help both on and off the field. Chill. Welcome Luka / Dobrodošao Luka!

    1. Thank you. Anyone would think the club just announced he’s Reijnders’ replacement – the final piece in the midfield jigsaw puzzle…

    2. Marquinhos the oldest player in the PSG squad is 31 years old. They are the European Champions.

We already have players older than 33 years in the team.
For context, Zlatan, Giroud and Kjear were need because the team was so young then, but that was some about 3 years ago today the least of them is 25 years old, we keep talking like our players are still that young.

The current age blend is perfect, we do not need grannies here to help out the incompetent management of the club, what we need is clear direction for all to follow.

We need physical players to add muscle, grit and precision passing in our midfield.

My only compensation with this is that it is not an expensive deal, hence a low risk, but I’m not excited but if we get him I hope he proves me wrong.

      1. Totally agree. I’m not excited about this one at all. I would rather see Milan sign an experienced defender to help guide the defense such Milan Skriniar who is only 30yrs old rather than signing a 40yr old Luka Modric.

It makes Milan look like a retirement home. I like Modric and I respect him as a player but if this happened 5-7 yrs ago I would be excited but not at 40yrs.

      2. Marqhuinos was also tought by Silva at a very young age, having someone like him their to guide him was also very crucial for his development. Madrid might be able to guide some of the primavera/ futuro players. I’m not really looking for him to guide the current senior players really.

      3. “The current age blend is perfect, we do not need grannies here to help out the incompetent management of the club, what we need is clear direction for all to follow. ”

Sure. Everything’s perfect with Leao & Theo being the leaders here, am I right? We’re doing far better now than when we had Flo, Z, Giroud & Kjaer aka the Grandpas leading the pack, right? At least I am truly impressed by the leading examples seen by Theo the 27-year-old, mature leader and the true captain of the team. Let’s bring in more youngsters to learn from him & Leao. I smell the third star coming in our shirts real soon.

        1. You in one quote hail your infallible Maldini for a job well done and in another quote you say the players aren’t good, forgetting that they are a direct scorecard of your infallible Maldini.

Instead of you guys to be constructive in your criticism, there is enough blame to go round, from players to ownership to management both past and present, but you guys somehow push blames and exempt your favourite.

    1. I was going to say that maybe now, even if it’s only for the last 20-30 minutes of each match, Pulisic will finally have a competent teammate who might actually look his way more than twice per 90 minutes!

      1. That’s because Modrić is a creative player with vision and passing skills. Something we lack with all the headless ball runners and chasers in the middle.

        1. This! Modric is the (type of) player we’ve been desperately missing since Pirlo left. He’ll do wonders when we problems against teams parking the bus in front of their goal.

Also, IF Leao stays, imagine Modric feeding him the balls Leao thrives on. We might actually have two ~20 goal wingers next season.

    1. LOL. Embarrassed??? I think you mean proud as most had retired ages ago for being too lazy or unfit. Being able to play with 20-year-olds at 40 is a massive thing that only kids like you fail to realize. You might get it when you reach 35. Or not. Probably not.

  4. Good deal. We sorely missed leaders on the pitch and in the locker room. 20-30mins per game for Modric is well worth the investment.

  5. This is ridiculous. He is 39 years old. He was a great player but it is to late for him to come to milan. I think it is some kind of a record for the oldest player milan have signed.
But I hope I’m wrong and he will bring some great changes.

  6. Luka will be great for one half a game. Allegri plays a 721 formation, where will Modric play. I hope Rafa stays he’s the best

  7. Sell reijnders 75m and Milan got modric for free. Milan might only buy Ricci for 30m. So Milan can have profit 45m. Smart buyer. This is what cardinale looking for. Hahaha

  8. Milan management keeps break ignorance and dumbass records everyday !!!! Keep it up what’s next ? Go after retired players

  9. Modric is 39 years old and Reijnders is 26. Which team in this world that is trying to compete in champions league or win the league could come up with an idea like this. This is the same as the tonali situation. Only an idiot could be supportive of this idea.

    1. Milan is not in the Champions league. Or any other European competition. And Reijnders wants to go to City. I would say that the club competing in the universe 1st league would have to spend 500M but that doesn’t exist.

  10. If you think Walker was a good signing and Modruc isn’t, there is something inherently wrong with you and you should get it checked out. I’ve read more than a few mentions how Ibra was younger or Walker was a leader. Ibra was 38. Walker was never a leader, never in his career.

  11. So many hate in comment. He maybe dont have stamina to play full 90 minute but he can inspiring young Player beside ACM only play in local league so why not? His salary in ACM only 3,5 m euro nett below king origoat that disappear from milan futuristik. His vision & creative can help Santi scoring goal too
