Moncada admits Milan made attempts for Bellingham and Vinicius Jr: “We couldn’t compete”

It is rare for Geoffrey Moncada to communicate much about ongoing things at AC Milan, but today, it has come to light that he made attempts for two stars before they moved to Real Madrid.

The mercato is often difficult in many ways, whether due to planning, finances, registration or a mix of all three. Then comes the other big difficulty – everyone else, and this is often the case with younger players.

In recent years, the value of Under-21 players has soared with clubs more willing to invest in potential now than they may have been in years gone, and Real Madrid have been prolific with this, often landing the most-hyped young talents on the planet.

Regardless of interest from elsewhere, Los Blancos have normally always got the better of others if they hold the same interest in a player as another club, and Moncada revealed that Milan have been a victim of this to Harvard Business School, as Milan News relays.

On his role as the Technical Director…

“The technical director is the link between the coach, the players and the rest of the sporting side on the one hand, and the commercial side on the other. I answer to Giorgio [Furlani] and talk to him every day, several times a day.

“I try to share as much information as possible. How are the players? What do we need for the future? Which contracts do we need to change? What can we improve in the medical department or the youth sector?

“We have a team of ten scouts working with us: five are in Italy and five abroad, and we have data scientists at Casa Milan who help us find players with data.”

On the calls with Billy Beane every Monday…

“He asks us questions, gives us ideas and helps us find good players with data from Zelus [player data analysis company] but the final decision on a player is never based on numbers alone.”

On the ideal profiles for Milan and the Reijnders example…

“We are taking calculated risks with young players rather than buying big names with high salaries. You may not have immediate success this way, but you build for the long term. Reijnders played in the Dutch league and we were the only ones to bet on him. You ask yourself: he’s a great player-why doesn’t anyone want him?

“We managed to get him for a great price. And now he is a starter for us and plays for his national team.”

On other faded profiles…

“We tried to sign [then 17-year-old] Vinicius Jr. and [then 20-year-old] Jude Bellingham, but we couldn’t compete with Real Madrid. We had to accept that. We have brought great players to the club in recent years, and as a former scout I see it as a personal challenge to take underrated players and make them perform at the highest level.”

    1. They werent competing. They probably went their traditional way- Dortmund asking for 113Mil, and Moncada&Furlani offered 25mil+’great project’. No wonder they didnt take them seriously

  1. Is this suppose to be a comforting interview after Gerry’s disaster?

Portofolio of this clown as technical director:

    1. Wasting 200 millions
    2. Replacing Pioli with Fonzy
    3. Getting Milan out of Scudetto race, possibly out of CL spot and CL next round qualifications.

Now post the one with Furlani where he’s saying they “needed to fire Maldini in order to realize Gerry’s vision of Milan” and other cr*p.

Man, these interviews are getting better and better🍿

  2. Then tell Mr Cardinale that he will have to put his hand in his pocket a bit deeper.
Maldini told him and other clubs do it.
I assume the American knows that he now owns one of the greatest clubs on the planet…..? The basis of success and achievement is on the pitch itself, not just selling the yanks the brand and a load of souvenirs.

  3. Sure we got tijji, a 25yo for a solid price..and he’s doing fine. One hit. Want me to name all the other midfielders we signed or loaned that didn’t do fine?

The saddest part about all this is Moncada believes he’s doing a good job.
I bet after he is fired from Milan someday (that day can’t come soon enough) he’ll end up in some low lvl French club.

    1. Out of so many misses something has to turn ok just by chance. Btw Adli, Pobega, Salamakers are all doing good too. But this clown send them away.

      1. So, once sold, Adli, Pobega, Sale, would make at least 30 million in capital gain. Enough to bring new starter on right flank.

Only missing piece, in their logic, is this year catastrophy play, and finish below 4th position. Everything else – they made completing fine.

Sale of Tonali (he is still not worldclass superstar), was very good, now having Bennacer, Tiji, and Fofana. Youngsters are ok, and revitalised stars, like Pulisic.
You can compere by bringing Origi, who was strong name, but but his name stayed in Futuro club.

Year by year, they must build stronger team, to be competitive. Thats why sale of Kalulu, ADli, Pobega Sale is good. And i hope in near future they will sell those who cant compete now on bigger stage.

  4. If he had said while he was at Birmingham then it’d have been believable but the Bellingham of Dortmund was too expensive for us. Is Moncada aware he said this?

  5. We can complain, this management care less and all they do is what they understand. I pray that whatever they are doing should not take my beloved Milan to oblivion. I am keeping my finger crossed 🤞

  6. Liar. He joined Milan the same year as Vinicius joined Real. And Madrid sealed the deal before Moncada was even hired. Did not happen. And what, Milan wanted to offer 100M for Bellingham but he picked Madrid? What a bunch of bs, obviously lying.

  7. There is no problem in not being able to sign overvalued players like Belingham or Vini Jr. Which is really unacceptable is to sign an excellent player like C. de Ketelaere, be unable to explore his full potential on the team and then sell the man for peanuts to a rival club, only to see him playing wonderfuly.

  8. And that my friends are the traits of a professional liar! he is even saying this while keeping a straight face hehe. Genius!
They are here to build a team of competitors. maybe if the stadium was empty, they would take the fans serious.
    It’s all one big mess!!

  9. What a joke.. The system may have had a virus when he scouted E. Royal. And it surprises me that Zelus only focuses on the French league and Chelsea’s bench…
