Montella discusses Locatelli’s Milan exit: “I don’t know how to explain it”

By Isak Möller -

In the summer of 2018, AC Milan decided to part ways with Manuel Locatelli, who came through the youth ranks of the club. The midfielder is now at Juventus and is deemed to be one of the best in the league.

Understandably so, many have questioned the Rossoneri’s decision to sell the player to Sassuolo. On the other hand, it’s clear Locatelli wouldn’t have got enough playing time to develop his qualities at Milan.

In an interview with Sportweek, which is the weekly edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport, former Milan coach Vincenzo Montella spoke about Milan’s decision to sell Locatelli. The quotes below were transcribed by MilanNews.

“I don’t know how to explain it. I was gone and in that period, Milan changed managers several times in search of corporate stability. The club was in a hurry to return to certain levels, and Locatelli was probably not considered ready for those levels,” he stated.

Locatelli himself has recently revealed that he always wanted to join Juventus as he supported them as a child. This, of course, has resulted in a different mood among the Milan fans with regards to his departure, deemed not as negative anymore.

  1. Locatelli demanded to be sold outright and only to sassuolo even though other clubs like atalanta showed interest and thereby sassuolo could pretty much dictate the fee as we otherwise could have atleast pushed it up a bit further. He wouldnt accept to be loaned out either even though milan preferred such kind of arrangement. Milan as a club should never accept being held at ransom by any of its players and certainly not from young and upcoming players like he was at the time. While milan fans has been screaming for him to return ive hated his guts for such behaviour that both cost us a lot of cash but also a starter had he been loaned out or even stayed as we all know the injury woes biglia instantly had with us. He and donnarumma can break their legs for what i care and preferably as early as tomorrow.

    1. I mean he’s ok but he’s no Kante or Casemiro so he’s not a threat to us. Just because he scored a goal against Juve. All of a sudden he’s acting like a big shot

      1. Well he should have accepted to fight for his position at such a young age even though he had shown some impact but the reason he only wanted to join sassuolo was propably that they have a close connection dealing with juventus to begin with so im affraid it was allways his plan to join them down the road. Milan neverthless never should have accepted his demands.
