Riccardo Montolivo retired in the fall of 2019 after his contract with AC Milan had expired a few months earlier. Speaking on DAZN yesterday, the midfielder aimed a jab at his former manager Gennaro Gattuso.
Montolivo arrived at Milan in 2012 and spent seven years at the club, being a key player for the Rossoneri in most of those. In his final season with the club, however, he didn’t play a single game and was even left out of the squad towards the end.
Speaking live on DAZN last night, as cited by MilanNews, Montolivo shared his thoughts on Leonardo Bonucci’s situation at Juventus and explained he went through a similar thing at Milan. Once again, he aimed a jab at Gattuso.
“Bonucci? It also happened to me when I was at Milan. I had an unfair manager (Gattuso, editor’s note) who, without even communicating it to me in person, excluded me from of the squad, in bad faith. For the good of the team, I took the hit. I don’t blame Bonucci, I understand his reaction, but it will be a bitter battle with no winners,” he stated.
The fact that Montolivo didn’t play a single game in his last season was indeed a bit strange, especially since Lucas Biglia (who arrived from Lazio in 2017) was by no means impressive.
