Moretto: Jovic’s ‘1+1+1+1’ Milan contract explained and his chances of staying

Luka Jovic is enjoying a good run in front of goal, but AC Milan have not yet made a decision regarding his future according to Matteo Moretto.

After his brace in the 3-0 win over Inter on Wednesday night, Milan have a chance of winning the cup and qualifying for the next edition of the Europa League thanks to a player that was ironically left out of the 2024-25 Champions League squad list.

It has been a strange few months for Jovic, who renewed his contract last summer and was given the No.9 shirt, but then quickly became third choice after Alvaro Morata and Tammy Abraham joined. He struggled with injuries and consequently didn’t get many minutes.

Everything pointed towards a winter exit and then a move away this summer. Yet, Sergio Conceicao has entrusted the Serb with an increasingly central role, and his four goals in the last five games could change the cards on the table.

Speaking on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel (via MilanNews), Moretto shed light on the future of Jovic and the prospects of him potentially staying beyond June.

“I want to start today’s video by talking about Luka Jović because the Serbian striker is in fact the Rossoneri hero in the return leg of the Coppa Italia final against Inter. He is a player who has found very little space within the hierarchies this year, first under Fonseca and then under Conceiçao.

“You want a bit of bad luck because Jović has had several ailments, he has had several stops also on a physical level due to injuries that have not helped him in his growth path, in terms of performance, but also because certain choices have brought him to the margins of the Milan squad.

“Luka Jović has played very little this year, we were saying, 78 minutes in the Coppa Italia and two goals, decisive against Inter, 348 minutes in the league and two goals. The Serbian striker, born in 97, is therefore a player who still has several years ahead of him at a certain level, at a certain type of performance, and is a player who has shown that he can still be decisive.

“So, I want to start from the assumption that Jović and Milan have not yet made a decision on the future. Jović has a contract that expires in June, and the parties will discuss it towards the end of May. In any case, in the month of May, we will understand better whether or not Jovic can continue at Milan also during the course of next year.

“However, today I want to focus on Jovic’s contract, on the contract that Jović signed in August 2023, because it was a deal that closed at the last second: Jović signs this annual contract for Milan, renewable for another 3 years. But this 1+3 is a contract that needs to be explained, because it is structured in a very particular way.

“It was conceived by Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani, who decided to structure it in this way to also protect himself in terms of performance. It’s so he can decide from year to year, based on the player’s performance, what path to take, both on the club side and on the player side.

“So, in fact, this Jovic contract signed in August 2023 is not a 1+3, but a 1+1+1+1. So every year, at the end of each season, the parties can decide by mutual agreement whether to trigger the automatic renewal or not.

“Last year Milan decided to keep Jovic, they decided not to let him leave on a free, therefore to renew his contract and this year it will be the same. This year the parties will decide by mutual agreement.

“Let’s remember that Milan closed the Jovic deal in August 2023, practically at zero cost, because a free transfer was closed with Fiorentina. From what I understand, among other things, it wasn’t exactly at zero cost.

“Milan paid a small compensation, almost €200,000, but still a very, very low amount, negligible, then compared to the performance that Jović has given in these last two years, even if in any case let’s say the personal opinion is that Jovic could have given even more based then obviously on his form, then based on the minutes, etc. etc.”

  1. I wrote so many times regarding with Jovic contract renewal . He is best striker so that Milan should have keep him no only Jovic the coach also so necessary for milan Sergio is best coach in the world Milan should have keep him next season Milan will fight for scudeto if Sergio stay at milan . No alegri no conte no italiano no paladino only Sergio for Milan .

    1. “Sergio is best coach in the world”
I’m not saying he is without any talent but come on get a grip as he isn’t even in top 10 so let me guess you are in fact a Portuguese yourself and that is the reason why you come up with such an outrageous claim or what ?

      1. He’s not the best in the world, but I think he’s our best option currently. He inherited a squad that wasn’t for him and wasn’t able to put in his tactics and shape until about a month ago, which they looked better then when he started but haven’t gelled completely yet. I would say he needs to get better at man management though if he wants to get better.

        1. Well even if that is the case then he is hardly the best in the world as professed by Tefe. In the case he wins the Coppa Italia and keeps getting results for the remainder of the season I can understand that he will be under consideration to stay as stability is also an important thing in success. He did know though what he was getting into by accepting the job so taking so long to figure out of how to play is sorta a bad excuse as it is his job to figure out how to play and who to field and who to exclude. Not that I’m a fan of either but Fonseca didn’t have his first team internationals available either before 2 weeks or something before the season started so it’s not like he had much better way to perform or adjust players to his style of play.
Anyways hope we can win the Coppa Italia so the season at least has brought a minute amount of joy to the fans,

          1. Nah mate, fans just have unrealistic expectations.
Aside from a brief honeymoon period, no new manager is going into an unstable squad and expected to get everything 100% right in just 2 months.

Not even Pioli could do that, and he had the benefit of a 2 month Covid break during the season, and still finished 6th place in that first year with us.

No coach can come into a mess of a club, and be expected to turn the ship around immediately.

Look at Ranieri at Roma, he joined 14th November 2024, and things only started clicking for them after January 2025. They got kicked out of Coppa Italia by Milan in February, and knocked out of Europa by Bilbao in March.
They’ve been eeking out results now because they’ve only got one competition to focus on, but it still took Ranieri at least 2 months to steady the ship.

          2. Where did I say that he should get 100% correct ? nowhere.

Well he has had some good games but also seriously bad decisions along the way. In fact our win% has gone considerably down while he has been at AC Milan so no need to sugar coat things either.

Romas squad is pretty much inferior to ours so not much of a point to compare the two.

  2. Everyone’s contact should be structured this way. Players need to prove themselves every year and be judged after every season.

    1. It’s good and bad, depends on how the contract is worded and if they don’t sneak something in to make it worse for a player.

  3. extent him b4 he’s gone free, he’s good enough as rotation. new strikers in serieA usually slow in adaptation (Santi, CDK) we dosn’t need another one if Santi stay. also if Inter sell Arnautovic/ Taremi to Arabs or Thuram go to PL, Jovic can be their ideal replacement

  4. That contractual system 1+1+1 are good to avoid failure like caldara & origi. But the question is how many top player want to accept that system? Jovic accept that because his career falling down from Real Madrid to fiorentina and both club choose to release him free transfer. Do you really believe top player will accept that? Only failure player & unknown raw young player will accept furlani offer
