Moretto: Milan make decision on Jovic renewal with new striker in mind

By Ben Dixon -

AC Milan will recruit a new striker this summer, but ensuring that they have quality backup behind the newcomer was a must, and a report has confirmed that Luka Jovic will be the backup.

As Milan looked to invest in a successor for Olivier Giroud, they were also at risk of losing the Frenchman’s deputy who joined last season. However, that risk has gone today, with Matteo Moretto reporting on his X account that Jovic will stay.

It has been a difficult season for Jovic, and he would admit this himself. Initially, he struggled, and questions were asked about his arrival, but a stellar winter period showed that the Rossoneri had a quality backup striker in the Serbian.

Whilst his form has not extended into the latter months of the season, he has still provided key goals at key times, and the value of this cannot be understated. There is a lot of pressure on the incoming striker, given they will be a youngster moving to be the starting striker of a club of Milan’s size whilst replacing Giroud, which is a task difficult at any age.

However, having a deputy like Jovic will greatly aid any transitional process required whilst keeping a goalscorer available if needed for rotation.

Moretto has confirmed that he will stay, and an agreement has been reached between the club and the player, but there is no insight into how long the deal will be for, given there has been speculation about how a deal may be structured.

    1. Okay who is good enough then?
How many striker do we have?
How many of them are ‘good enough’?
Are we signing ‘good enough’ striker(s)?

We are so arrogant that we still live in early 2000s like we were dominant club.

      1. If Milan wants to progress and improve, they need to sign players with more quality. Jovic was not even good enough for Fiorentina and they let him go for free, now he is good enough for Milan? He did not show anything special this season – all he shown was that “he is not terrible” as he scored a few goals, that’s all. No other serious club was even interested in him, bet if he wouldn’t sign with Milan now he would end up in some Turkish club or even in Saudi.

This is the striker you want for Milan, even as a 2nd striker? Not mentioning he ain’t playing for charity, club will have to reserve a solid briefcase if money for his salary and block space for other, potentially more interesting striker.

      2. Guirrassy would be better.

Unless when we play Jovic we also see Ok4 coming in as a second striker.

Seems to be that the key problem is that with a pure target man like Giroud we simply could make a like for like substitution.

Jovic likes drop and link. He poaches in the box. He isn’t going to win many headers at his height.

So if Jovic I expect to see far better ideas on how to deploy him from Fonseca over what Pioli was showing us.

  1. Good news

Now just focus on CF, CDM, and CD. Jovic and Okafor is enough as back up.

CF : Zirkzee, Dovbyk, or Gimenez
    CDM : Wieffer or Fofana
    CD : Buongiorno

RB (if there’s money left, prefer someone Italian) : Bellanova. Tick a lot of boxes, also solve the homegrown quota, as he is our academy product.

  2. Smart.
With a proper pre season and him being already integrated in the squad, good and sensible back up!
Let’s see what the rest of the Mercato brings!

  3. This is very good news, if only Pioli had not restricted his playing time as he was beginning to score, and get match fitness,Pioli is a destructive and timid coach. He kept playing Giroud even when he was completely exhausted, tired and burnt…..

  4. Good. He put in a lot of hard work and was showing his worth in the limited time he has had. I think now be should get more playing time. And we don’t have to spend a lot of time looking for a second player

  5. The reason he didn’t do better was pioli who kept playing Giroud 3 Times a week even when he wasn’t in form.
Same with chuku, pioli was too scared to bench pulisic or leao when chuku was getting better

  6. For rotation striker , he is doing good. Dont forget he dont have pre season and join last day summer market. With proper preseason & new coach , he can do better but ACM still need main striker for number 9

    1. Yeah glad you mentioned that. He also came with an injury and wasn’t fully fit for a couple of months.

Still I think we need to see Fonseca adapt the tactical approach when Jovic comes on.
