Moretto: Pioli tested a three-man backline with Pobega in training

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan will take on Monza at San Siro tomorrow and following the defeat to Atalanta last weekend, they need to claim all three points. According to a report, Stefano Pioli could field a three-man defence with Tommaso Pobega.

The Rossoneri are still struggling with several injuries at the back but Simon Kjaer has at least recovered from his injury. The Dane could play from the first minute, therefore, but it might be a three-man backline for Milan.

According to Matteo Moretto, as cited by Francesco Nasato, Pioli tested a three-man backline consisting of Simon Kjaer, Pobega and Fikayo Tomori in training. The midfielder would likely have a more advanced role in reality, shifting between defence and midfield.

Probable Milan XI (3-4-3): Maignan; Kjaer, Pobega, Tomori; Florenzi, Loftus Cheek, Reijnders, Theo Hernandez; Pulisic, Giroud, Lea

It certainly looks like a rather strange XI on paper, and if Kjaer is ready to start then there doesn’t seem to be any need for a three-man defence. It remains to be seen what Pioli will do tomorrow, with kick-off scheduled for 12:30 CET.

    1. Tring a new formation actually a proof that Pioli have BALLS because there’s no guarantee it would work. And Pobega is still young. Unless you mean little kids from primavera then sure if you want to see Milan defense line looks like amateur.

I’m just glad people who have no fkin clue like you aren’t the one who manage Milan or the club already play at Serie-C years ago.

  1. Laughing My A** Off!!! Now I’ve seen everything…

At least if Pioli doesn’t work out as a coach moving forward, he could make a good comedian.

POBEGA in a three man defense…. HA HA HA HA

  2. Whatever he does Pioli is criticised anyway. Obviously the 16-18 yo amateur academy youngsters aren’t good enough during practice to start a professional national elite division game. Pioli crafts with the players who are not on injury list.

    1. obviously our academy is one of the best placed in italy , 2nd after inter ,1 point behind them, gasperini called 11 primavera players for europaleague match , played 2 of them as a starting CB’s , tryed 7 of them in this match and WON 4-0 , their most expensive player is from primavera Scalvini who started playing for senior team at the age of 17,he continously trying new players from primavera team WHICH is 9th on table and our primavera is 2nd ! and our master mind is scared of trying 1 youngster when he has no other choice then to throw players out of their natural positions! we lost our LEFT side a few matches cause he is scared to play Simic and he put Theo od CB who btw made 3 mistakes when we lost vs atalanta

      1. Why do you think Primavera players are mostly loaned in Serie B to start their professional career? The difference in intensity and velocity between Primavera and Serie A is behemoth. Scalvini is a generational talent and Atalanta is a feeder club that sells his best players to play kids and bargain players in order to finish at 4th. Looks like Milan though so I guess you’re right, let’s field the children.

  3. I love Pobega and other homegrown players but really! Really??? You have Simic and Bartesaghi! What is your bloody problem Mister? Just give one of them a chance already!!!

  4. Seriously? Wow!! Isn’t Kjaer back? If there is reservation about Kjaer lasting the whole match, why not try out Simic? I mean both are risky: playing a youth player like Simic or Bartesaghi but at least they have been training and playing in that position since day 1. Would playing youth players be riskier than changing an entire playing system and at the same time playing Pobega in an unnatural role? Not to mention Pobega is quite ‘carefree’ at times in hacking down his opponents.

  5. Next up let’s put chaka traore musah or adli as a CB. When you are needed a CB when they won the scudetto you put inexperienced kalulu. He never played in Ligue 1 but now when again you need a CB you aren’t putting simic or barteseghi or nsiala wow. I think his time has come to an end get rid of him ASAP

  6. It’s clear that he was putting Pobega us match situations where he will need to drop deep between his two CB…
This shows that most people who commented here, haven’t played real football and doesn’t even know how tactics works…
We should shut up and learn tactics

  7. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone got it wrong reporting what they saw. Maybe he played in midfield but sat between the 2 CBs when on defence making it look like 3 at the back
