Moretto: Pioli tested a three-man backline with Pobega in training

AC Milan will take on Monza at San Siro tomorrow and following the defeat to Atalanta last weekend, they need to claim all three points. According to a report, Stefano Pioli could field a three-man defence with Tommaso Pobega.

The Rossoneri are still struggling with several injuries at the back but Simon Kjaer has at least recovered from his injury. The Dane could play from the first minute, therefore, but it might be a three-man backline for Milan.

According to Matteo Moretto, as cited by Francesco Nasato, Pioli tested a three-man backline consisting of Simon Kjaer, Pobega and Fikayo Tomori in training. The midfielder would likely have a more advanced role in reality, shifting between defence and midfield.

Probable Milan XI (3-4-3): Maignan; Kjaer, Pobega, Tomori; Florenzi, Loftus Cheek, Reijnders, Theo Hernandez; Pulisic, Giroud, Lea

It certainly looks like a rather strange XI on paper, and if Kjaer is ready to start then there doesn’t seem to be any need for a three-man defence. It remains to be seen what Pioli will do tomorrow, with kick-off scheduled for 12:30 CET.
