As was reported earlier this year, the AC Milan Women were looking for two big signings to cap off their summer mercato. The team are, apparently, still looking to fulfil Coach Ganz’s wishes.
The first big signing for them was midfielder Julia Šimić, whose transfer was made official in August.
The second signing that Milan reportedly had their eyes on was Spanish midfielder Verónica Boquete. Though the team had expressed interest in her back then, they did not make a move for her. This could have been due to the fact that Boquete was still under contract with the Utah Royals, and Milan was waiting for her contract to expire before making a move for her. As of late October, her contract has now officially expired.
It now appears that the team has moved on from merely expressing interest in her, to making this transfer an actual reality.
According to Cartellino Rosa, Boquete was reportedly in advanced talks to join Milan. The talks were corroborated by other sources as well. The transfer has apparently moved past the negotiation phase, as the same site reports that Veró may be in Milan quarantining for a possible move to the team.
If this is true, then this would be a great move for the Rossonere. Verónica is not only one of the best players in the world but one could also argue that she’s one of the greatest players of all time.
The Spaniard has notched up a litany of noteworthy accolades, including winning the Champions League, winning domestic titles in three different countries, and being Spain’s all-time leading goalscorer.
She even has a stadium in her hometown named in her honour, as the people of Santiago de Compostela are proud to call her one of their own.
If Boquete were to sign for Milan, then it would bring team’s game up to another level. The Galacian is a technically gifted player who can play in various positions. Her guile and talent are so great that it would take a separate article to explain how she would enhance the overall quality of the squad.
And if the rumours are true, then Milan are on the verge of a great coup.
However, Boquete herself has also said that she’s received a few offers from various teams around Europe. She might be entertaining those offers as well. Friends that are close to her have also reported that she has not made up her mind yet, in terms of which team she’ll sign for, and if she did leave the Royals, then a team in Spain would be her priority.
Add to this the fact that the Utah Royals have also extended a new contract offer to her, and her future gets more complicated.
Although the team has extended a contract offer to her, there is also no guarantee that she’ll stay with them. There is still an air of uncertainty over whether she’ll remain in Utah.
Boquete herself spoke of this, as she has stated that, “I don’t know yet what’s going to happen and if I’m going to be back or not next season.”
The midfielder also appeared to give her salutations to the Royals via Instagram. However, even that post is unclear, as Veró herself has admitted that it was posted with uncertainty. The player posted the ambiguous message while her agent was negotiating with the Royals, and she is uncertain if she’d return to them next season.
It must be noted that when Boquete was asked about the negotiations with Milan, that she did not deny it. Instead, she declined to comment on it and told the Salt Lake Tribune that “there is nothing yet”. The emphasis in on the word ‘yet’ here.
SempreMilan has also received hints of the Rossonere’s interest in Veró. A source who is close to the team has confirmed their interest in the player.
Whether the rumours are true or not will be confirmed in the next few days. In the meanwhile, stay tuned. And if Verónica signs for us, then be prepared to get very, very excited.
