Fonseca and Musah

Musah exposes Fonseca’s inability to instruct players: “Sometimes I was in doubt”

AC Milan suffered a terrible defeat to Parma last night as nothing went according to plan. Since the final whistle, there has been great criticism for the Rossoneri and Yunus Musah admitted that there was confusion on the pitch.

Milan conceded the first goal of the game with less than two minutes on the clock, immediately putting themselves in a bad situation. They failed to respond as Parma took control of the game and dominated the Rossoneri for large parts of it.

After the clash, which finished 2-1, Yunus Musah spoke to DAZN (via MilanNews) and admitted that he didn’t always know what to do on the pitch. Obviously, this is a huge warning sign and one has to question Fonseca, who needs to be very clear with his players.

“Sometimes I was in doubt whether to press or stay back. Then, I was a bit more aggressive and let the central defenders take on those behind me. After that, we managed to be more aggressive and recover more balls,” he stated.

The best teams, and even mid-table ones as we saw with Parma last night, know exactly what to do in every situation but that certainly hasn’t been the case for Milan. Instead, they have been incredibly disjointed and this has allowed the opponents to capitalise on acres of space.

    1. yeah 2 games and its all over

even if Milan won you would’ve made an excuse about how it wasnt a good enough win

Maybe one day you’ll stop drowning in negativity

      1. Dude, what positives have you taken from the last two games? We played Torino and Parma, not Inter or Juve.

Provide some analysis instead of just running your mouth

      2. when we had giampaolo and he was doing bad,M & M acted quickly to fired him after game 7th if I’m not mistaken, that really saved our season, let’s hope if fonseca still sucks, the management would be SMART enough to act fast and replaced him with someone much better

        1. Not defending Fonseca here, as the start has been very disappointing the team looks confused but… who would we replace him with? The time for getting the right manager was end of last season once we’d decided Pioli’s time was over.

The likes of Motta /Conte /RDZ etc have all found new jobs. Realistically we are stuck with Fonseca for a while, hopefully he can turn it around.

      3. Honestly, it feels like there’s a large group here who just wait for a negative result to jump out and explode here with “told you so” comments…

Like they don’t get enough justification or validity in their lives, they have to do it here.

Fonseca isn’t elite. We all knew this and hardly anyone was thrilled. But he is the coach and you have to give him a chance.

Two games in is hardly a chance.

    1. LOL So true….

Imagine if a youth player had come out and said “I don’t know what to do”, they’d never see first team football in Serie A or B again.

The double standards are just so obvious.

New signings are trusted for no reason other than they cost money.

      Like some crap IT system.

      1. if a youth player said, its confusing when we prepare and set up the press and then leao doesn’t press because we can’t start the press in the middle of the park. it would be super awkward…he’s too young to call out his teammates…

        1. Musah has been given so many chances.

He came to Serie A with over 100 games under his belt at Valencia yet all we hear are excuses about how he hasn’t been played in his ‘best position’ or he’s too ‘raw’.

The fact is he hold onto the ball too long, he won’t pass it simple, and his positioning is dreadful.

He cost us at least 2 goals last season that I can think of off the top of my head.

Our midfield is really terrible and Musah is right up there as the weakest link.

          1. 2-2-1 in champions league with him in the pivot with reijnders. Wins over PSG and Newcastle and they should have won that first Dortmund game…I don’t really see it as chances, I see it as playing your best defender in the midfield…

Raw…I wonder what they mean by that, people also say his best skill is dribbling which is an unfortunate reading of the game. He doesn’t maintain very close control, hes good at scanning and reading defenders movements and using it against them…that and his positioning and timing tackles defensively. Maybe I’m missing something but what about his positioning is dreadful? I won’t use stats but he covers a lot of ground ahead of time so that he’s positioned correctly. The best defenders cover ground so they could defend with their positioning.

    2. he had more tackles in 66 minutes than Theo, RLC, Reijnders, Pulisic, Leao, Okafor, Emerson and Fofana combined…

So far this season, outside of Leao and Pulisic, he leads the team in key passes…

What does defense and passing have to do with dribbling? Maybe watch the games…

      1. Interesting stats….but I don’t really go for stats (or lies or damned lies…).

From what I have seen of Musah (and indeed Reijnders) is that they don’t offer enough in midfield in terms of positioning and they slow down play.

Whether Musah or indeed Reijdners could perform better alongside a ‘midfield general’ type player is a possibility we will probably never know because the management refuse to sign one!

        1. A ‘midfield general’ to my understanding is a box to box midfielder who contributes both offensively and defensively. I would argue that while this might have been one player in the past. Today, teams are trying to fill their midfield with this style of player.

Musah’s defensive positioning is the key to why he wins the ball so often on his tackles to launch counters which is the only way that leao gets the opportunities for 1v1s.

Reijnders should be able to grow as a defender, he has the size and speed and intelligence. He is a too talented offensively to take off the field.

Who do you see as a ‘defensive general’ that you were interested in? Neither of them are vocal…they are young and relatively new to the team. There doesn’t really seem like there is much leadership on the team, pushing players on both sides..There seems to be a lack of comradery that hasn’t improved. When Nandez punched Musah last season…no one went after him…very passive…it was a way worse incident than whatever Jovic got suspended for…but they just pretended it didn’t happen. I would have hoped for more from Tomori and Mike there.

Regarding lies…are you saying that the stats are inaccurate or I’m confused.

  1. Fonseca is not good, but remember, this kid gets paid millions to do his job and he’s acting like his job is to just be a robot. His job is to also read the game for himself abd make good choices, and and he’s not taking responsibility. Whining players like this are the wrong way forward for this team.

    1. He was asked and gave an honest answer. That’s whining? He was terrible but he’s always been smart with what he’s said to the journalists.

  2. Nobody wanted fonseca but I can’t put all the blame on him. He had a preseason with half the squad missing and the rest turned up on August 10. That’s two weeks ago. They obviously aren’t up to speed but I fully expect a different game against Lazio because this was unacceptable. If we had lost against Lazio and inter and start with 3 defeats in 5 games I don’t see how you could keep him but my biggest fear is firing him and getting allegri.

  3. This is worrying, and I’m pretty sure most of the players were feeling the same. Because they looked like headless chickens last night

    1. Alex Ferguson: “Teamwork is the foundation of success. In a high press, every player must understand their role and work together to pressure the opponent. It’s about unity and trust.”

If Fonseca wants to play high press then he must fix this. It is sad that he was blaming the lack of willingness to defend after the game and didn’t even see that his high press plan was a total disaster.

    1. Yup, it feels like this season we will just watch how stupid this 🤡🤡🤡 squad was in their choices and just wish things went differently during the summer.

    2. everybody knows the only reason Fonseca was signed is because he’ll do cardinale’s bidding without a question. he’s a beta. motta and conte are alphas and that doesn’t jive with the redbird ego fest

  4. “Yunus Musah admitted that there was confusion on the pitch. ”

Meaning the players didn’t know if they should try to prevent Parma from scoring or not, eh? Most of the players surely didn’t.

  5. Yunus is extremely dumb player ,i have seen it from the moment he first step on field and there is no way he can get better, he has some skills but he is dumb

    1. So Musah should have been smart and figure out the game plan by himself without the need for a coach or instructions.

This is your smart comment about an article where a player is saying he didn’t know what to do during the game and didn’t get instructions so he had to improvise.

You see how dumb you and your comment are you dumbA$$ jackA$$

  6. It’s not about instructions from the coach… it’s about what to do when someone else isn’t following instructions…

Leao is supposed to press so that the defender can’t make an accurate pass…Musah then pressures. But it’s too risky to pressure if the defender has time to pick out a pass.

There is no instruction on what to do if Leao doesn’t press because everyone is playing high so if he doesn’t pressure the ball the play is already lost.

The defense and midfield get a lot of blame for the defending…but the midfield can’t effectively defend in those games when teams have time to pick out passes.

  7. Musah it just not up to the level that we expect. Although there are several more but this is what you get when you pay 20 Million on potential, he is the worst of the bunch. Not that Fonesca should be sacked, but I still think of Conceição.

  8. Well as it is said in text: “Parma last night, know exactly what to do in every situation but that certainly hasn’t been the case for Milan”,
Because why would Milan know all situation? Its not like Milan owner is not 8 billion, or God knows how many billions worth owner, so why the fu** he should know anything about soccer ?

Why would Milan have players, or coach, who knows anything, about this game ?

  9. And this is normal!!???? A player goes into the pitch without knowing what to do 😭😭😭😭😭

    God help us ..

  10. Fonseca deserves a full opportunity, at least two months to set things straight.

The management should support Fonseca and the players.

Zlatan was happy to joke and laugh talking about himself to CBS during Parma’s game in the break despite the horrific first half from Milan, that was disgusting.

  11. That more or less matches what I saw. The press was attempted but was rarely in sync. For the first 20-25 minutes of the second half, the counter press looked good and it appeared Milan would grind them down. And then another breakdown and complete fail.

Fonseca will fix the press or he won’t be coaching Milan.

  12. Musah = bad player
    Fonseca = mediocre manager

If i’m in the management, I’ll give Fonseca 5 more matches if he can fix this mess. If not then i’ll replaced him. But i already know the management doesn’t gonna fired him even if Milan sit in the bottom of the table.

  13. I am not saying Musah is a great player, but look at his stats last game. Most tackles in the midfield and of the advanced players. He certainly makes mistakes, but they seem to be magnified by people on this site. I think he’s talking about the team being disjointed so he didn’t know where he should be
