Musah believes Milan competition will help him ‘really improve’ and sheds light on position

By Oliver Fisher -

Yunus Musah has admitted that the fight for a spot in the midfield at AC Milan is driving him to be a better player, because of how high the level of competition is.

The 20-year-old midfielder became Milan’s eighth signing of the summer transfer window as he signed on a five-year deal from Valencia, where he had spent the last few years after leaving Arsenal’s academy.

He is yet to make a start for the Rossoneri thus far having found competition for a spot in the new-look midfield three due to the presence of Rade Krunic, Tijjani Reijnders and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Musah spoke during an interview with CBS Sports while away with the USA national team and he was asked what it has been like to make the jump from Valencia to Milan, with his comments relayed by Football Italia.

“It’s been great. There’s so many great players in that team, the competition is high, so this is an opportunity for me to really improve and test myself,” he told CBS Sports.

“If I’m training against these guys every week, trying to take their spot, it’s about grind, giving my maximum and keep improving. I’m just going to keep training hard and when the opportunity comes, I’m going to try to seize it.”

There has been some debate among fans and journalists about what Musah’s best position is, given he has played as a box-to-box midfielder and also as a more defensive midfielder for club and country.

“I played as a 6 and an 8, but I feel personally I need to develop in all these areas. I can do the job, but I feel that I can do much better. I feel more confident being an 8, so I can go deep and go high. I feel like being an 8, I can be a 6 and a 10 at the same time.”

    1. Musah is important backup. This season we play on 3 competitions, league, cup and champions league. peak season, we play 1 game every 3 days, while opponent usually play 1 game every 6-7 days. this always happens after first international break, so for now backup seems useless at first.

in short, almost every player will play this season. it all depends on wether they play alot or not. Plus pioli’s high press system tires leg alot, and injuries along with it. This was our downfall last season, incompetent backup.

lets hope our benchwarmer are ready for games, and Pioli not sticking to same 11 every game. i would prefer pioli rotate 2 players each game, and only field best 11 against strongest opponent. this way first eleven only play 6-7 games per month, and backup plays 2-3 games.
