Napoli 0-1 AC Milan Women: Rossoneri rewarded with last-gasp Dompig winner

AC Milan Women secured a big victory on Sunday as they scored in the last minute to defeat Napoli away from home and continue a good recent run.

In recent seasons there has been a trend of games between Milan and Napoli Women being decided by a stoppage time goal and this particular occasion was no different, as this article will explain.

In Cercola, Chanté Dompig’s goal in the 92nd minute awarded the Rossonere their second win in a row, after the Lazio victory that came inside the final 10 minutes back on 29 September.

It is a result that secures fifth place and continues a good trend after a very difficult start to the campaign. The Dutch forward Dompig followed Laurent and Dubcová who scored late winners last season to reward a good display from coach Bakker’s side.

The Rossonere showed a lot of solidity in possession, patience in the build up and the desire to find spaces out wide. The next game on the schedule is Matchday 6, on Sunday 13 October at 12:30 CEST, which is AC Milan vs. Sampdoria.

Praise from the coach

Bakker has not had the easiest start to life as the new coach of Milan Women and drew criticism after failing to win any of the first three games, but the upward trajectory continues after the derby draw with Inter late last month.

“Of course I am happy, at half-time I told the team to believe. In the first half we controlled the game, I said that by creating chances and believing we would score. There were 45 minutes to play, we scored and I think in the end it is a deserved victory,” she said to Milan TV after the game.

“We can improve in the offensive phase, in the final quarter of the pitch, in the choices we make that are not always the best, in the direction or speed of play of the ball.

“I think we have room for improvement that can lead us to create more opportunities and increase the probability of scoring goals. This is our objective.”
