GdS: Napoli begin mission to overtake Milan in pursuit of Lazio star – the situation

AC Milan face competition from Napoli to sign Mario Gila from Lazio, according to a report in La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The paper (seen below) report that Napoli are going for a defensive rebuild in the summer window to try and regain the solidity that was one of the secrets of Antonio Conte’s Scudetto triumph in the 2024-25 campaign.

Juan Jesus is on his way out: his contract is expiring and no renewal is on the horizon. Alessandro Buongiorno is coming off a difficult season, and Sam Beukema hasn’t had the impact expected after arriving from Bologna.

So, Napoli have set their sights on Lazio’s Mario Gila, whose contract expires in the summer of 2027 and who has already informed the Biancocelesti that he does not intend to renew. Lotito is at a crossroads: sell now to cash in, or try a tug-of-war to keep one of Serie A’s best central defenders?

Negotiating with Lotito is certainly never easy, even when the contracts should technically encourage lowering demands. There’s an added difficulty in the negotiation: Lazio owes Real Madrid 50% of the future resale price

Milan face competition

Napoli like Gila because he can play in a three or a four-man defence. He also earns €1.1m net per year at Lazio, and it’s easy to imagine Napoli raising his salary to €2m without too much fuss. The problem, as we said, will be convincing Lotito to let him go.

Milan have also been eyeing Gila for some time, but now they must focus exclusively on the pitch: a Champions League spot becomes crucial for their upcoming transfer window. Napoli want to capitalise on this in the coming weeks and their mission to overtake is already underway.

According to the English press, Liverpool are interested in Sam Beukema, coach Arne Slot’s protégé from his time at AZ Alkmaar. The British media reports suggest Slot would like to invest around €30m for the Dutch defender. Napoli could sell, and then reinvest on a player like Gila.

For his part, the Spaniard has a dream of one day returning to Real Madrid, after having progressed through the youth ranks and made two appearances in LaLiga for them. But, Napoli would be a welcome destination and would guarantee him the chance to shine in the Champions League.

  1. Recently it was Buongiorno and then he went to Napoli because they wanted him without a 50% discount. Milan is interested in talking, but when you have to pay – weaseling begins.

      1. Yes, but Jashari was one of the most embarrassing stories of the summer. It was like 1.5month of no, we are not offering over 34M (or 36M?), and then they did. 😀 Nkunku was purchased like it was prime Ronaldinho for a low price.

  2. I honestly feel we need to invest in Italians, besides Gila lacks the physical characteristics we need, we could go for Luca Marianucci or Alessandro Marcandalli, they are both Italians, powerful, young, strong, good and have a better physical structure than Gila, they are both better and cheaper options

    1. There is barely any better CBs in the whole league and you come and mention these two bozos 😅😅😅

Yes Italy must rebuild and play the youth but there is a big way from that to saying they are better than Gila. Loooool

      1. I said they are better options, not better than him right now, they are Italians, physically more developed, and cheaper
