Nesta labels Maldini’s sacking ‘beyond any logic’ and sends warning to ‘foreign owners’

Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta has become the latest prominent figure to cast doubt on the decision to sack Paolo Maldini as technical director.

There has been a wide-ranging response to the news that owner Gerry Cardinale has sacked Maldini and Ricky Massara from their respective roles as the technical director and sporting director of Milan.

It brings an end to a four-year journey under the tutelage of the duo which was a positive path overall, resulting in a Scudetto, three straight Champions League qualifications and a run to the semi-final in this year’s edition.

We attempted to break down how things went from a position where Maldini had autonomy in the transfer market to all of a sudden losing all the trust of Gerry Cardinale in a feature published earlier in the week.

Nesta was interviewed by Sky last night and he was asked about the departure of his friend and former team-mate, with his comments relayed by SempreMilan.it.

“I haven’t spoken to Paolo yet. I’ll call him later. I don’t know what happened but it’s beyond any logic,” he said.

The former Rossoneri centre-back also wanted to send a message to foreign ownerships that control several football clubs in Italy.

“Foreign owners are welcome but you have to study history when you go to a club. Bringing Milan back to winning the Scudetto and making it to the semi-finals of the Champions League has a weight, it cannot be minimised.”
