Nesta raves about Maldini after Fiorentina performance: “Since he was a child”

By Ben Dixon -

This summer, AC Milan parted ways with Daniel Maldini and the youngster rejoined his former club, AC Monza. Could the decision have been a mistake? Given the midfielder has begun to show his best for his new club already, and it is just the beginning.

Getting rid of young players always comes with a risk, but sometimes you see the benefits of those risks – like Milan did this summer with Marco Brescianini’s move to Atalanta for €12 million, a transfer which earned the Rossoneri €7m.

The alternative side to this is when young players leave and become much more highly rated, or there is a gap in the squad that they could eliminate, and Maldini could potentially be seen in this way in years to come.

He bears the name which is all too familiar to Milanisti, a name which is embedded into the history of the Rossoneri. Maybe this adds pressure, but the club will never know.

Monza are the club who could find out, though, and after his performance against Fiorentina this weekend, questions could be asked about whether the Diavolo made the right decision about the midfielder.

Following the game, Monza’s head coach, Alessandro Nesta, spoke about the youngster, and his words have been relayed by Milan News.

“I’ve known him since he was a child… even he doesn’t know the potential he has, he has impressive shots, he must improve in the management of the game. If he finds the key he has no limits.”

  1. As we desperately need a proper AMC, and here we are letting go a natural AMC for free so we can watch Ruben playing on his unnatural position in full time.

  2. All that should be said to our owner Carnevalle who kicked Maldini out of ACMilan and replaced him with a similar clown as himself.

  3. I think Daniel Maldini problem was that when he transitioned in the first team he wasn’t used to the physicality in seria A. In the youth sector i guess he was kind of protected cause of his last name and he was rearly tackled in the academy. But beyong that he is very tehnicaly gifted and at 22 he can still catch up physicaly and have a great career. I still don’t understand how neither him or Pobega could get a chance in the first team but Loftus can be played week in week out no matter how bad he is. Imagine if we gave all that playing time to Maldini.

    1. He was never given any real minutes for us as he played like 500-550 minutes combined for us over all the seasons he played for us and still he had goals and assists now he is playing for monza and last season as well he still produces a good amount of goals/assists pr. minute.
Personally i think he should have played instead of Diaz and I think he was pretty much let go of because he would be a bad reminder for the ownership.
Hope he one day comes back for us but i have my doubts. Pobega didnt really get many minutes either even if he played more than maldini he didn’t get a real chance either.

  4. Another brilliant move by the 🤡🤡🤡 BANKER Furlani. What a disgrace.

At the very LEAST – Why did we not get a sell on clause like we did with Bresciani???

Our management is a joke. The lack of experience shows. I also think this was just about Gerry trying to rid Milan of any reference to a Maldini. So much so that we gave a player away (awhile still under contact) for FREE. Disgusting.

I truly hope he becomes a superstar amd rubs it in Gerry and that idiot bankers face

  5. It’s a sad state of affairs when we get rid of one of our own, who is in fact talented as we can see at Monza, to replace him with an import who is being played out of position, shows how misguided and idiotic our current management are, if he was 6 foot and from France it would be a different story.
    Sad days.

  6. Jesus christ people in here is just crying. No other team wanted him, he only got to Monza because Gallani and Nesta is friends with his father.

    1. for your jesus cry, you are so idotic. how could people want him if milan doesn’t know how to make him more appeal with more game time maybe, anyway after what paolo do to our milan and see what happen now?
are you blinded by some idiot maybe??

    2. still better than suckWhoSee? he always disappear on the field even w/ better teammates & D. Malda cost lower (fee + salary).
please just stop looking for an excuse for the mediocrity of our transfer department

    3. The article is about his good form for Monza, so the issue is letting good of a talented young player for free having given him no chance.

      1. Yes way worse.
Good form for Monza? Well Piatek was in good form for Genoa but never got anywere near that form again.

You guys just want what you dont have, all the time. I bet you are the same people saying when he played in Milan he wasnt good enough.. but now because he has scored 3 goals in 2 seasons he is what we need 🤭

        Go and sleep some.

        1. Again you are missing the point. Even if he was unlikely to get playing time at Milan, don’t you think a loan would be a good idea?
That way if he has a good season we might earn a few euro selling him?

        2. Pirlo Seedorf Cannavaro Simic Helveg all of them suck at Inter cz they don’t give them fair chance just like we’ve done to Malda, Locatelli, Acerbi, Cristante, Darmian

  7. There isn’t anything particularly unique about Maldini’s story, he’ll just become the most bizarre example of the abject failure of the Italian system to develop its own youth. It is not a problem unique to Milan.

He’ll be the most bizarre example because of his name, its importance to Milan, and because of his undeniable talent. But then look at how the other most talented players of the new generation are faring, Cher N’Dour is playing in Turkey for game time and, by the time he can escape Chelsea, Casadei will have had no game in 12 months spanning his 21st and 22nd year (which is the time he should be entering his prime).

Most of this happens so that Italian clubs can record capital gains to enable them to continue spending on mediocrity.

At some point we’ll look back on it and it ask ourselves how players as bad as Brahim Diaz, RLC and (as an AM) CDK could have been given opportunities Maldini was denied. But that’s the system. It’s the reason the Azzuri have been irrelevant for all but a month of the last 12 years and it’s also the reason teams like Milan have struggled – because they prioritise spending significant money on international players who do not justify the price tag.

We like to think that Milan Futuro is a new dawn for youth development but time will tell whether Camarda, Liberali, Bartesaghi (as a CB), Zeroli, Torrinai, etc, all end up playing for Milan or whether the usual impatience results in the signing of more mediocrity that makes progression into the first team virtually impossible.

    1. Honestly in some ways the Simic situation is worse.

They identified and worked hard to sign one of the most promising teenagers in Europe.
He was a pillar of the Primavera that got to the semi final and final of the uefa youth cup.

He broke into the 1st team when there were injury problems, scored on debut! Never made any mistakes and looked like a very good option for our defensive roster.

He was then told he could play in serie C or leave. He said thanks, I’m out of here. They sold him for 3m – what a joke and what a waste of time.

If he is given no chance what hope for the other youths?

      1. Well losing Simic is a great shame but he had an expiring contract and had according to reports in the media refused to renew it so it seems like the choice was made in according to that. Had Pioli used him more he might have renewed but a club like milan really guarantee a starting place for such young players either.

        1. I get what you are saying. I believe if he was sold on our project, he would have stayed.
Making him our 5th choice CB would have done that and he could be registered as he had 2 years under his belt

  8. I saw that game and he was mid, kinda early to be anointing him the next big thing but Ben never misses a chance to spin things to make management look bad…

    1. This is not about his game against Fiorentina. That’s just the reason the story is relevant against. I agree that he wasn’t amazing against Fiorentina, probably a 6/5 /10.

But he has made 13 league appearances for Monza for a total of 504 minutes (excluding stoppages).

He has scored 5 goals and provided 1 assist in that time. It gives him a contribution every 84 minutes played.

If he was some 21/22 year old kid from Argentina he would be being raved about on those numbers alone.

      1. *That’s just the reason the story is relevant again. I agree that he wasn’t amazing against Fiorentina, probably a 6.5/10.

        —–

He also scored against Genoa in R2 but for Petagna straying offside by a penis width in the build up.

It’s not an isolated patch of form with Monza. He’s carried on from where he left off last season. I think his best performance this season was R1 v Empoli. His hold up, dribbling and distribution was really good.
