Newcastle defender admits Milan ‘could have scored a few goals’ in Champions League clash

By Euan Burns -

Newcastle defender Dan Burn has admitted that AC Milan could have scored a few times against his side in the Champions League and will be annoyed not to have won the match.

Speaking during an interview with Milan News, the English defender was very honest about the pattern of the 0-0 draw that the two teams played out in September.

The match in question ended 0-0 at San Siro but the hosts missed a number of superb opportunities to take the lead, especially in the first half.

When asked if Milan deserved to win, he said: “Yes, they had the best chances while we didn’t create much. Milan could have scored a few goals but it must be said that we defended well. In the end we were happy and the Rossoneri were disappointed because maybe they knew they had to win. But a clean sheet in Milan in the first game after a 20-year absence in the Champions League is more than fine with me.”

When asked about which players he admired the most in the Milan squad, Burn picked out Rafael Leao. As Newcastle’s left-back, Burn did not have to face Leao too directly during the game, instead being occupied with Christian Pulisic.

“I like Leao although maybe in the non-possession phase he can do more (laughs) but with the ball he is very quick. Then I am a big fan of left-back Theo Hernandez, a player who is very relaxed on the pitch and then when he has the ball he is so fast,” Burn said.

Whilst Burn had praise for Theo Hernandez, he did not want to be dragged into comparisons between himself and the Frenchman.

“I take it as a compliment but I can’t compare myself to Theo Hernandez,” he said.
