New coach, renewals and exits: The latest news on AC Milan Women

By Steph Insixiengmay -

The Serie A Femminile season is officially over and the Rossonere are busy preparing for next season. Though the team avoided relegation by winning the ‘Salvation Pool’, the sixth-place finish was disappointing for a team of AC Milan’s calibre.

The team hopes to prevent a repeat of this season and here are a few of the moves the team plans to improve for the future. Below is a round-up of the latest news.

Coach contacted

According to SempreMilan’s Luca Maninetti, Milan are interested in appointing Dutch coach Suzanne Bakker as their next coach. Bakker is the former coach of the Ajax Women who guided them to a second-place finish in the Eredivisie Vrouwen.

Bakker is also a tactically flexible coach who inspired the team to a few spirited performances in the Women’s Champions League, including beating Milan’s league rivals Roma and German Champions Bayern Munich in the UWCL group stages.

Bakker is also good at working with and developing youth players. One of the young players under her charge was 16-year-old midfielder Lily Yohannes. The American recently made her debut for the senior US Women’s National Team against South Korea, where she impressed with her passing ability and even scored a goal.

It should also be noted that, at the moment, Milan have merely shown interest in the coach and have not made a move for her. That could change within the upcoming days.

Exits and renewals

In contrast, former captain, Valentina Bergamaschi, is set to leave Milan. According to many reports in Italy, she will most likely leave the Rossonere for rivals Juventus.

Similarly, Milan’s other captain, Kosovare Asllani, has not reached an agreement to renew with the team. The Swedish player has a few offers to play abroad, including one from the San Diego Wave.

Maninetti also says that goalkeeper Laura Giuliani is close to renewing with the team. The details are still being worked out and will most likely be finalised in the next few days.

There are, however, a few players who have signed renewals with the team. One of them was Małgorzata “Gosia” Mesjasz. The club confirmed that she has signed a two-year deal that lasts until June 2026.

Christy Grimshaw has also signed a renewal with the team. The midfielder has signed a three-year contract as she will stay with the team until June 2027. Grimshaw’s extension was also made with her 100th game in mind. The milestone was unfortunately delayed due to the midfielder suffering an ACL injury.

And once Grimshaw returns to the team, she’ll hopefully be playing in a new, and much improved Milan.
