GdS: ‘No longer works miracles’ – Maignan’s drop-off in form clear to see

Mike Maignan is certainly not the same goalkeeper he may have been a few years ago, and perhaps, even this season the AC Milan shot-stopper has deteriorated a little.

When he first arrived, the goalkeeper was one with promise, and his first years with Milan proved that promise to be correct. A phenomenal goalkeeper and human, who represented the Rossoneri marvellously, as a football team and as a family club.

Whilst the ambassador side of Maignan still remains true – a reason why he wears the captain’s armband – his performances have trailed off a little.

As Gazzetta dello Sport write, the Frenchman ‘no longer works miracles’, and in fact, he is performing worse than a lot of Serie A goalkeepers, even those playing for ‘lesser’ sides in the division – the number stands at 16 better than him for preventing goals.

Mistakes have been more common, as we saw in the Netherlands, which the report deems simple, especially considering it happened earlier in the season too (against Cagliari).

Perhaps, the reason for this may be the constant changing of goalkeeper coaches. Since he joined, he has worked with seven different coaches, which could have had an impact, indeed. Then, there is the personnel in front of him.

Either way, the consistent changes are not doing him any good, whether it be those on the pitch or off it.

As a result of his fall, his position will be assessed by the sporting director when they arrive, however, there have already been suggestions that the Diavolo could return to Lille for Lucas Chevalier.

  1. Milan should have sold Maignan and Theo last summer. I’ve been saying that since Pioli left Milan.

These 2 players are not worth renewing their contract at higher wages. Smh

  2. I think, he should just focus on goalkeeping. his form dropped as soon as he was made the captain…

great role model but maybe the new-found responsibility is distracting from his “in-the-zone” headspace… his n1 responsibility should be the saves… that’s why I think bringing back Tonali would help a lot of people

  3. He will follow kessie style to leave on a free. All they need is to perform in their last season. Milan contract doesn’t have any option right to extend 1 more year, so Milan is always caught in back burner

  4. Mike is a human being like everyone of us…. seems we have forgotten all his incredible saves for us….Dida made a lot of errors too, did Berlusconi sold him??
its clear that most people who is commenting here, have never played football in a team in amateur level, and some dont even know how to kick a ball….

      amen!

  5. Turning your backs on a player when he’s in a period of bad form and forgetting all the times he was crucial for us. This fanbase (at least on this site) is getting worse with each season. And it’s even worse ever since Gerry took over.

  6. I love Maignan but yh I don’t think he is worth being payed 5 mil. 4 mil maybe but he didn’t perform better but worse so why pay him better now?
