GdS: No meeting over Leao’s renewal scheduled – two crucial obstacles must be overcome

AC Milan’s difficult start to 2023 could well have been boosted by the renewal of Rafael Leao, but there may be further delays on that front too.

As reported today by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), a meeting between Leao and the Rossoneri management does not seem to have been put in the diary just yet. In recent days, widespread sources reported that the long-awaited meeting would take place after the Supercoppa, with Leao’s lawyer in Italy.

However, the paper are claiming that a summit with the winger’s entourage is not yet scheduled and the issue remains very thorny for a lot of reasons. An agreement on salary has been found on the basis of a fixed amount between €6-7m net per season plus bonuses, and the fine owed to Sporting CP no longer seems to be as big an issue.

What needs to be addressed now is the whole aspect related to the commissions that the agents will receive, given money will be owed to the lawyer Ted Dimvula, Leao’s agent Jorge Mendes and his father Antonio.

Then there is the €150m release clause, which Milan would like to eliminate or keep at a high price, but Rafa’s entourage aim to lower it to facilitate a future transfer. Premier League clubs are watching on, and while Chelsea have splashed out on Mudryk and now Madueke, all the big names in England have the economic strength to call Milan and buy Leao.
