AC Milan needed to go out and send a message in the derby tonight at San Siro after being dominated in the last four games. The response was emphatic, but in a negative way.
Milan slipped to their heaviest defeat for a long time against Inter, losing 5-1 to goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan (x2), Marcus Thuram, Hakan Calhanoglu and Davide Frattesi, surrendering their perfect start to the season in the process.
There was pressure on Milan to respond after their 3-0 defeat in the Supercoppa earlier in the year, their 1-0 defeat in Serie A, and their 3-0 aggregate defeat in the Champions League semi-finals, and yet they seemed to take a step back.
That means that Milan have officially lost all five derbies in 2023, by a scoreline of 12-1 in terms of goals conceded versus goals scored, and across three competitions too.
It simply has not been a contest, and the numbers lay bare the need for Stefano Pioli to come out with some actual answers for the way Simone Inzaghi’s men play.
