GdS: The numbers behind Milan’s poor display against Fiorentina

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan had their bubble burst against Fiorentina when they were beaten 2-1 after winning four games in a row without conceding a single goal.

As has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Rossoneri seemed to slip back to bad habits in the loss against La Viola and there are numbers to back it up and show where they went wrong.

Milan had less of the ball than Fiorentina at half time despite the scores being 0-0. They then had 56.7% possession in the second half but still managed to leave big spaces for Nico Gonzalez and Dodo to exploit.

In the recent win against Atalanta, Milan made 534 passes, but against Fiorentina it dropped to 396. They were not winning the ball back as often either. Milan recorded 81 ball recoveries against Atalanta but 55 against Fiorentina.

It seems that a sloppiness and lack of urgency crept into Milan’s game and it is something Stefano Pioli must stamp out against Tottenham.
