AC Milan and Genoa have announced the loan transfer of Lorenzo Colombo this evening. It’s a loan that includes an option to buy, in favour of the Rossoblu, which could become an obligation.
Colombo left Milan’s pre-season tour early to fly back to Italy for his Genoa medical tests, which he completed earlier today. In other words, tonight’s official statements from both clubs were expected and for the player, it’s a new step in his career.

As was confirmed a few days ago, the buy-out clause is set at €10m and it will become an obligation if certain conditions are met. First of all, Genoa have to avoid relegation, while the striker might also need to reach a certain number of goals and appearances.
Colombo to Genoa: Official
On Milan’s official website, the statement reads: “AC Milan announces that Lorenzo Colombo has joined Genoa CFC temporarily, with an option to buy which becomes an obligation upon the fulfilment of certain conditions. The Club wishes Lorenzo all the very best for the upcoming season.”
On Genoa’s official website, the statement reads: “Lorenzo Colombo is a new Genoa player. The striker, born in Vimercate (MB) on March 8, 2002, arrives on loan from AC Milan, with an option to buy that becomes mandatory upon the fulfilment of certain conditions.”
In other words, Colombo’s long tenure as a Milan player – having come through the youth ranks – could officially end next summer. At the age of 23, it certainly feels like the right move both for the Rossoneri and the player.
We just hate our youth system with a passion huh? Unless your Zlatans kid who gets spoiped treatment, this management is gonna reject you even exist and never give you a chance. Our academy system is appalling…

And yes accountant students are better off having multiple placements over the course of their program because they’ll be able to sample different aspects of accounting before settling on a longer term stint at a company. So really you couldn’t be more wrong in your own analogy.

Another Italian homegrown player out. I’m not that attached to the nationality, but he would have been a free registration in the squad and it’s starting to look like we are only going to have a maximum of 21 registered players (17 standard, three Italians and one homegrown…plus a coupe of U22s), which is going to put a strain on depth. I didn’t see Colombo as an amazing long-term option but as a second or third choice CF for this season.
Comparatively light schedule this year, no need to keep players with no future. The 10M will be important next year as long as it’s measured by matches played in and not goals scored. You’re literally saying to keep him just to fill a spot? Nah rather it go to one of the current youth players than a guy that at best scores a goal every 5 starts
Oh, I agree, it should have been Camarda. But at the moment, Gimenez is our only penalty-box forward and Vlahovic is far from a certainty IMO.
10M obligation based on conditions is a theoretically good deal for a guy without a long-term future here, for sure.
But my point is just that it’s not like we can ship Colombo out and get a replacement in… we don’t have the registration slots.
It’s quite remarkable that Italy, a football mad nation of 60m people has ceased producing football players.
Scientists need to urgently find out whet has changed in the Italian DNA that has produced such curious results.

Amazing how when Italy was at the top, Italian teams had more Italians, and the Italian league was better.

Totally agree man. It’s such a strange coincidence…it seems like if you trust and develop your youth it may not bring results straight away but let it cook and in a few years we could be reaping the benefits and have our own Italian wonderkids winning the euros etc. but I am not sure. Also I know teams want to win all the time so would rather invest in experienced players but what has Milan done. Not signed anyone of huge value nor won anything in recent years bar the scudetto…who is running these Italian clubs…
But does “few Italian players in serie a teams” imply “Italian NT sucks”, or is it the other way around – “Italian NT suck” so therefore “frw Italian players in serie a teams”?
Yes of course fewer in serie a results in the NT sucking because there are less developed players to choose from. Back when juve Milan and inter etc played and developed so many Italians we could field 3x 11 for the NT.
Don’t get me wrong I am against pure Italians only but wish it was like Berlusconi did. Brought foreign champions in to help develop the youth. I.e van basten as opposed to Chuck for example.
It’s funding at grass roots levels. It’s just not there. The failure to get money into the game in early 00’s is a direct result ans to why they have got into the last 2 world cups, means a whole generation of uninspired kids as well, especially in this new technology age. The science is money. Plus we don’t nurture our youth as we chase instant results

Say we do bring in another striker. We have Gimenez and them. Say one of them gets hurt (or both). Who plays CF? I don’t understand why not keep Colombo and rotate him in as a possible backup and Coppa player. Plus, he helps with the squad registration.
