Official: AC Milan confirm signing of Strahinja Pavlovic on deal until 2028

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have got their second addition of the summer over the line as Strahinja Pavlovic has been officially announced as a new signing.

The deal had been in the pipeline for weeks and the centre-back arrived in Italy on Monday night, undergoing his medical on Tuesday – one that was more attentive than usual due to previous heart issues – and signed his contract today.

On their official website, Milan state that they are pleased to announce the signing of Strahinja Pavlović from Fußballclub Red Bull Salzburg. The Serbian defender has signed a contract with the Rossoneri until 30 June 2028, with an option for an additional year.

Born in Šabac, Serbia, on 24 May 2001, Strahinja developed in the youth academy of Partizan Belgrade, where he made his first team debut in February 2019. In two seasons with Partizan, he made 57 appearances and scored 2 goals, winning a Serbian Cup.

After that he had spells with Monaco, Cercle Brugge, and Basel before moving to Red Bull Salzburg, the club where he accumulated 71 appearances and scored six goals, winning an Austrian Bundesliga title and also playing against Milan in the Champions League.

The 23-year-old has amassed 38 caps and scored four goals for the Serbian national team, having made his debut on 3 September 2020. He was a starter for his country at the European Championship in Germany this summer, and he will wear the No.31 shirt that Jaap Stam did with the Rossoneri.

  1. Great deal and very happy about it materializing as I had previously expected that he would end up in one of the better clubs in England and at a far higher price than we end up paying for him. He is already a great defender that will strike fear into the hearts of our opponents but I can see him developing further in Italy in the coming seasons to become a star.

On a side note can someone explain me something. I saw that Chelsea had bought a Danish goalkeeper earlier today and he signed a 7 year long contract with them. Wasn’t those long term contracts outlawed or is it just permitted in the EPL ?

    1. Hey Martin,
according to ChatGPT, there are no specific regulations limiting the maximum duration of player contracts. The UEFA also does not have specific restrictions. Currently, their focus is more on Financial Fair Play (FFP).

      1. Oh ok thanks Gio, I was pretty sure it had at least been under consideration to put a ban on those long term contracts.

          1. Ok so Its only in England or what ? If that is actually the case it seems to be an unfair advantage and its not like its the only one.

        1. it’s an internal italian legislation that does not allow contract work length more than five years. it has nothing to do with Uefa or fifa

          1. Still I do nevertheless believe that every league should comply to the same rulesets but the whole ordeal has been explained further down the thread.

        1. Prem clubs can do longer contracts.

Chelsea in recent years have been known to use longer contracts for their big signings for amortisation reasons, to avoid FFP issues. However, UEFA have changed the rules so that the maximum amortisation period is 5 years.

Prem clubs can still sign their players to long contracts (I.e. more than 5 years), but they no longer have an accountancy advantage.

          1. Sorry JJ I initially missed your post.

Yeah I’m aware they have done those deals previously but was surprised that they was still allowed to do them but good to hear that they cant spread the amortisation any longer after the initial 5 years.

          2. There is the same restriction in England as of this year I think – that’s one reason Chelsea were throwing crazy contracts around for the last few years, they knew the ruling was coming.

        2. Sorry, i was wrong Bernhard!

According to FIFA regulations, football player contracts are generally limited to a maximum of five years unless the laws of a particular country allow for a longer term. However, in practice, some clubs have found ways to structure deals that effectively extend the contractual relationship beyond this limit, often through mechanisms like contract extensions. In the case of Filip Jørgensen’s transfer to Chelsea, it’s reported that he signed a seven-year contract, which might include options or extensions that comply with FIFA rules.

          1. There you go. It would be strange if all of these teams all across Europe had randomly decided together to limit contracts to 5 years, no?

          2. No worries Gio and thanks for the clarications,
Not only does EPL have far superior advertisement deals so they can pay far more in fees and salaries then they also does this which further increases the gap in their power acquiring players as they can spread the amorisation further and in all of that ffp helps them monopolize the market. That’s preposterous its about time that these things is stopped and while we are at it lets remove their option to register eu players. An absolute farce this sport sometimes has become.

    1. Probably not the best nickname when playing in Italy as “Il Mostro” is an unidentified serial killer from Firenze who killed a lot of people over the span of 3 decades 😀

        1. Probably would be more acceptable but its not like I’m Italian so wouldn’t really be able to say so. I’m pretty sure to say though that if he played for Fiorentina calling him Il Mostro there it would be in really bad taste.

  2. Good news; I don’t know the player well but seems like he was high up the list of preferences for the club.

I wonder why we’re only signing to a four year deal instead of five. Seems weird in this day and age not to amortise the fee over more time.

  3. He is a welcome addition and great signing. We now need a proper defensive mid to partner Bennacer. If we cant agree a deal for fofana we should move for one of the players in Saudi like Kessie or Ruben Neves to bring back to Europe.

      1. The question is Kalulu is being played as CB in friendlies so RB experiment over i guess… 5 CBs are a bit overkill, I see either Kalulu settling as RB, or Thiaw sale plus RB purchase

        1. 5 CBs is relatively standard for a two CB defense. Kalulu is being counted as a CB it seems.

          LB1: Theo
          LB2: Jimenez or Bartesaghi
          LCB1: Pavlovic
          LCB2: Thiaw
          RCB1: Tomori
          RCB2: Gabbia
          LCB/RCB3: Kalulu
          RB1: Calabria (or Royal)
          RB2: Royal (or Calabria)

  4. I love this signing. We’ve needed someone like this in the defence and hopefully an developer into a monster. Strong, aggressive and an aerial threat. Welcome to the team!

  5. What do you think about an LB backup? Are we relying on Theo playing most of the games without injury again and Jiménez being ready? Or is the answer then Terraciano?

  6. Watched ds guy on utube. The is very good and aggressive. Hopefully, someone in our defence should be able to complement him

  7. Great signing.
The management is doing really good. Now all we need if no departures is a good CDM and were good to go.

  8. Welcome to AC Milan. Hope he does well.

The positivity in here is overwhelming so that bothers me lol 😂😂😂. Jus from yt highlights some concerns on recovery speed and a bit of pace given the level of that league (same issue with Reinjders last year). Unfortunately highlights don’t show positioning much so I’m hoping he has that in spades because he’s going to need it. Otherwise, great backup to Tomori and Gabbia 😏

    1. Despite his staggering height and frame he isn’t slow so I wouldn’t worry in that regard. He is also great at positioning himself and for that matter wining the ball back. I pretty much expects him to become an instant starter or at the very least very quickly integrated as a starter.
Of the players we have either signed or are rumored interested in I’d rather buy myself his shirt as he is the one I’m the most happy that we probably will get in this mercato.

        1. Not a lot but I’ve seen him play a few times before in recent years in Europe and I like what I’ve seen and think he will become a great success for us. Obviously there isn’t any guarantees in life but I feel pretty confident that he will turn out great for us and we shouldn’t forget either that atl. madrid also wanted to acquire him.

  9. His name along with his mug is enough to make any player think twice when standing in front of him. A young Stam.

Joke aside, welcome and hope you can show that grinta and toughness we’re missing at the back. And most of all, stay healthy🤞

    1. Just as an interesting fact about his name and why I mentioned it.

It derives from a word “strah” which means “fear” in most of balkan countries. It started as a superstition that the name Strahinja or “fear” will chase away evil spirits that would potentially harm or corrupt a child.

So yeah I hope he lives up to his name and put fear into his opponents bones.

      1. Ha thanks for the explanation Ted, I don’t understand the Balkan languages even though I’m a big fan of Emir Kusturicas movies they are at least with subs but I actually said earlier that he would instill fear into the hearts of our opponents, rather fitting then 😀

        1. I’m from Slovenia and although our language and traditions are quite different from the rest of the Balkan I still understand and talk the language. We were in the same federation afterall.

          1. Yeah ok that makes perfect sense. I quite like the Slovenian band Laibach and had also been hoping that we would sign Sesko in this mercato.
