Official: Atalanta vs. AC Milan starting XIs – one change from Frosinone win

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has made just one change to the starting line-up for the game against Atalanta compared to the team that beat Frosinone last weekend.

With the crisis at centre-back having not improved, Theo Hernandez will play in the centre of defence alongside Fikayo Tomori. Alessandro Florenzi will be the left-back again and Davide Calabria the right-back, with Mike Maignan in goal.

The midfield will be Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tijjani Reijnders and Yunus Musah, though it remains to be seen if the Englishman will play in a more advanced role as he has done before.

Olivier Giroud returns from suspension to lead the attack, with Samuel Chukwueze to his right and Christian Pulisic on the left.

Official Atalanta XI (3-4-1-2): Musso; De Roon, Scalvini, Djimsiti; Ruggeri, Ederson, Pasalic, Zappacosta; Koopemeiners; Lookman, De Ketelaere.

Bench: Carnesecchi, Rossi, Holm, Muriel, Zortea, Adopo, Bonfanti, Mendicino, Del Lungo, Colombo, Manzoni, Miranchuk, Cisse.

Official Milan XI (4-3-3): Maignan; Calabria, Tomori, Hernandez, Florenzi; Loftus-Cheek, Reijnders, Musah; Chukwueze, Giroud, Pulisic.

Bench: Mirante, Nava, Simic, Bartesaghi, Krunic, Bennacer, Pobega, Adli, Chaka Traore, Romero, Jovic.

    1. Saving Bennacer for the Newcastle game?
Bennacer has played 10 minutes in the last 7 months. They aren’t saving him for any team. He is not ready to start or play extended minutes yet, especially not in an important game in UCL vs Newcastle.

      1. TBF, he will improve the team by a mile, even if he hasn’t played in months. It’s not like we have a chance to qualify for the RO16.

    1. Since the PSG game RLC has been a ghost.

We signed a lot of mediocre players in summer. Chucky looks like an amateur. Musah has way more skill than him and would probably be a better RW.

When asking if the team is evolving or devolving, there is 1 simple question…
In a midfield 3 who would start from RLC, Musah, Reijnders, Tonali, Bennacer, Kessie? (forget krunic, adli, pobega)?

I would guess Tonali, Kessie, Bennacer every day

      1. Exactly, this new midfield doesn’t produce anything. If you look at our play it’s always the back four overlaping to Chuk and Puli or Theo drives it forward from the middle. Those three in the middle seem they’re there just for the number.

        1. How would they produce anything ? We don’t work the ball thru the middle, we work it thru our GK and defenders. How are the midfielders supposed to create anything ? Your coach is a problem

  1. Good header by Giroud, even if I am surprised/frustrated he started over Jovic who finally found some form.
Regardless, Milan were lucky as it was a definite foul my Musah in the build up to the corner.

Is that the 1st goal we have scored from a set piece?

  2. We just conceded a second goal and Atlanta are playing well too. Let’s hope we get something from this game…and Bennacer is on.

  3. Need to rewatch the game in detail but at first blush, CDK looks to be the best Milan player on the field.

    Yeah, feeling crunchy 🤢

  4. Listen to this. What coach would play loftus cheek as an attacking midfielder. A man who breaks up play, who is physically superior. At the same time plays reijnders defensive mid. A man who has great dribbling and passing and poor defensive quality. Am I missing something here? And on top of that musah is a right winger. Pioli is clueless

  5. A useless coach tried an experiment against Frosinone, using the laziest defender in the team (Theo) as a CB , that experiment, although we won, didn’t work. And then the stupid coach, thought it was a genius move to try same experiment against a better team like Atalanta.
We spend more time passing the ball back to our GK than we do going forward so why won’t our attack look toothless ?! Pioli’s tactics is killing this team. No young players will want to come to this team. Pioli should be coaching a retirement community, not Milan. Smdh

  6. Again Pioli proved why he shouldn’t be Milan coach. We are struggling against every team in Serie A. This coach is absolutely clueless…one way tactic…if any. Its clear Cardinale and go don’t understand the game of soccer..they may have mistaken it for American football.
