Official: Gil Manzano will officiate first leg between Milan and Inter – the precedents

By Isak Möller -

UEFA have officially announced the referees for the Champions League semi-finals and Jesus Gil Manzano will be in charge of Milan-Inter. A familiar face for the Rossoneri fans for one very special game.

The designation was announced by UEFA earlier this morning (via MilanEye) and the Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano will officiate the crucial derby. He will get the help of Juan Martínez Munuera, who will be in charge of VAR.

It’s a referee that many Milan fans will recognise given that he officiate the 3-1 win against Dinamo Zagreb earlier this season. Furthermore, he was the referee in the 1-1 draw away at Red Star Belgrade in the 2020/21 season.

In the same season, he also officiated the now-famous Milan encounter with Rio Ave. The game went to penalties and the Rossoneri prevailed 11-10, and it’s believed to be the catalyst for Milan’s success under Stefano Pioli (as said by the manager himself).

Gil Manzano has not officiated any Inter games yet, so this will be a first for the Spaniard. He will have to keep his cool, because the fans will be all over him.
