Official: Giroud receives two-match ban for red card against Lecce

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud has received a two-match ban for the red card that he was given in the 2-2 draw against Lecce on Saturday afternoon.

As has been communicated officially by Serie A, the French striker is going to be unavailable for selection when Milan return after the international break.

The first game he will miss is against Fiorentina on November 25, and then he will also be absent for the game against Frosinone on December 2.

Giroud was shown a yellow card in the 93rd minute of the match against Lecce with the score at 2-2, but his protests to the referee were deemed too strong by the official and a second yellow card was quickly shown.

Giroud did apologise to the referee after the match, and there was scope in the rules for him to be given a four-match ban.

Instead, it will just be two games which is in keeping with other similar incidents earlier this season.

  1. It was expected and it could have been much worse. We should be able to deal with both fiorentina and frosinone at San Siro without them especially if pulisic and okafor and chukwueze is available and leao should be back for at least the frosinone match.
Hopefully jovic will also step up in the meantime and as it would be great seeing him start putting in an extra effort and score against his old team.

    1. I saw highlights of Colombo in Monza v Torino, he was impressive again, despite not scoring. Great lay-off’s with his feet and head to setup numerous chances. 1 lovely backheel .
      He’s quality

      1. I havent seen it but Ive always liked him as he also has a good shot and movement on and off the ball but next year he should be maybe 3rd choice upfront and then in the next couple of years it will be up to himself to carve in his own place but things can quickly change in football so it might happen sooner than later.

  2. It’s unfortunate Leao is also out as it would have been good to see Leao, Okafor, Pulisic starting some games together.
Anyway he needs a rest and Okafor needs to get more playing time, so it may be a blessing in disguise!
Pulisic, Okafor, Chucky could be an interesting attack v Fiorentina, tho probably Pioli will play Jovic (who I just don’t think is worth persevering with)

  3. This may be a blessing in disguise. Two games in a row is a good chancefor the outcasts to get into rhythm. Jovic is a decent striker on his day and is still relatively young. His mentality has been in question but a couple of goals and a chance to be a hero may get him back on track. As for Okafor, it was not clear to us (and maybe to him) if he was going to be a starting striker or a back-up left winger. If it’s the former, he should have been given 3-5 consecutive starts right away. Instead, we’re guessing what his role is. He’s shown glimpses but unless he gets continuity in a new league in one position, he will struggle.

  4. Let’s be honest. Giroud needs the break. Physically and mentally worn out, hence the lashing out against the ref.

So I would play Pulisic/Okafor/Chuk trio up front against Fiorentina and Frosinone.

  5. Giroud is class ,sheer class it’s a big loss ,,,but he will be back for the big game .He is not tired or worn out .
Far from it ,,,his goal tally is pretty decent ( just take a look ) also his assists ..
He will play for France during the break .
That said it gives chance to jovic and okafor to get to play ,,so that’s good ..But Olivier Giroud will be back .
The best man to lead the line ..He deservedly got a red card ,,and is lucky it’s only a two match ban .
Don’t bet on him not scoring against Dortmund..
That’s why we need him …indeed we need pulisic / Loftus cheek ,and Refeol leao ..
With these players back we can beat anyone .

I also have great faith in pioli ..
