Official: Inter vs. AC Milan starting XIs – no changes from Atalanta loss

AC Milan head coach Sergio Conceicao has named his starting line-up for the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final against Inter.

After the first leg finished 1-1 at San Siro, tonight becomes a one-off game of sorts to try and reach the Rome final. Both goals came in the second half in the game three weeks ago as Tammy Abraham got the opener and Hakan Calhanoglu equalised.

Official starting line-ups

Milan have an almost empty treatment room for the first time in a long time as Emerson Royal is the only absentee. Kyle Walker and Ruben Loftus-Cheek returned to full training during the week, but only the midfielder makes the bench.

There was a lot of talk in the build-up to the game about whether Conceicao would go with the three-man defence again. The answer is yes, with Fikayo Tomori, Matteo Gabbia and Strahinja Pavlovic the centre-backs and Mike Maignan in goal.

Alex Jimenez and Theo Hernandez will be the right and left wing-backs respectively, while Youssouf Fofana and Tijjani Reijnders comprise the double pivot.

It seemed in the build-up to the game that Tammy Abraham would be in and Luka Jovic would drop to the bench, but the latter has got the nod again. The Serbian will have Christian Pulisic to his right and Rafael Leao to his left.

Official Milan XI (3-4-3): Maignan; Tomori, Gabbia, Pavlovic; Jimenez, Fofana, Reijnders, Theo Hernandez; Pulisic, Jovic, Leao.

Bench: Sportiello, Torriani, Gimenez, Loftus-Cheek, Chukwueze, Florenzi, Thiaw, Bartesaghi, Bondo, Terracciano, Joao Felix, Musah, Abraham, Sottil.

Official Inter XI (3-5-2)Martinez; Bisseck, De Vrij, Bastoni; Darmian, Barella, Asllani, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Taremi, Lautaro Martinez.

Bench: Sommer, Di Gennaro, Arnautovic, Correa, Acerbi, Frattesi, Calhanoglu, Pavard, Carlos Augusto, Berenbruch, Cocchi, Zalewski.

  1. My heart says we will hopefully win but my brain tells me we will most likely lose as I wouldn’t be too surprised if we end up losing 3-1 but lets see if we can bring something extra out tonight.

    1. I agree. Jovic is a supersub, who is best coming on for the single striker, or coming on as a second striker when we’re searching for goals. It has been proven time and time again that he’s not the best option to lead the line alone from the start.

    2. Conceicao should have setup the team like this upfront. Pulisic looked tired and wasn’t lively in the last game.

      Abraham

      Leao Jovic

  2. Again with trident offensive composed by one striker and two wingers.
A formation like 3-4-1-2 work better in my opinion.

    Maignan
    Tomori, Gabbia, Pavlovic
    Jimenez, Fofana, Bondo, Theo
    Reijnders
    Abraham, R. Leao (Pulisic)

  3. What does this club have against Tammy? He’s been our best striker all season by any measure but they refuse to give him starts. It’s bizarre.

    1. “Off” would be an understatement. Bisseck has absolutely dominated, and humiliated Leao in this match. I think Leao is 0 for 10 in trying to get by him in this match so far.

      1. Its expected that they have a massive possesion % as they are huge favorites so even if it ends 0-1 in our favor and they played the best I’ll still take that with open arms.

  4. What I don’t like to see is the failed long pass after long pass. Kudos to Jovic. He often drops really deep. Looks like Leao has more advanced position than him most of the time.

  5. Not only are they playing banter era football, we have Borini and Cerci back on wings.

Kudos to Jovic, guy delivers when he’s delivered.

  6. Lovely goal.

Outside of that we have been poor.
Inter will be calm as they are creating chances.
We will need another goal to win this.

    Leao and Pulisic are terrible.
I’d almost bring Chuck on, and that is a dire situation.

    Just no Felix please.

Perhaps bring on Tammy for Leao and Bondo for Pulisic. 3412 with Tiji in the hole

  7. Imo we need to leave the attack alone for next season – just focus on getting a dm and defenders… I don’t know what else Jovic and Tammy have to do at this point…

    1. I agree and I think we are amongst the few commenters here on SempreMilan who always liked Jovic and for the matter Pavlovic if my memory serves me right.

    2. I don’t know. Even a couple of goals in a pivotal match doesn’t mean we don’t have striker issues. I remember Gianni Comandini scoring a brace in a derby, but then what became of Comandini? I’m just not convinced that over the long run, Jovic or Abraham are what we need. I would certainly not spend money on Abraham.

As to DM, 100%. This is where we need a lot of help. Then depending on what our formation is next season, we’d need another CB and no outgoings.

Finally the most important thing in defense is SUBS for LB and RB. Theo has had no proper deputy for the entire time he’s been at Milan. Then on the right, if Walker stays I think we’d be OK with him and Jimenez, but if Walker goes, then we’d need to consider a Jimenez backup or someone of a high level to outright compete for the starting spot.

      1. Well if we could bring in a striker of the Osimhen level or something I’d take it but management keep talking about strikers on the same level or worse like Lucca so I really don’t see the point in changing Jovic/Tammy for that. We need a dm and imo a starting rb, backup lb if Theo stays and at least one class cb..

  8. 15 minutes left. Conceicao should consider bringin on Walker for Jimenez. We could use his fresh legs and experience to see us through.

  9. Great job by the guys, especially Jovic, completely stunlocked inter with those pokes. Really glad we stuck with the formation and didn’t revert back to 4231 like we always do. Definitivily have a great chance of winning another trophy this season
