Official: Marco Sportiello undergoes surgery on hand after tendon injury

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have confirmed that Marco Sportiello underwent surgery today to repair an injury to his hand that he suffered while out in the United States.

Milan lost Alessandro Florenzi for almost the entire season after he ruptured the cruciate ligament and lateral meniscus in his right knee during the match against Manchester City, and that was not the only injury that happened.

Sportiello missed the City match and it became apparent that Mike Maignan’s deputy suffered a serious cut on his left hand in a hotel in New York, one that would see him miss at least a couple of months due to the severity.

Now, the club have confirmed to us that Sportiello had an accident involving his left hand in the team hotel in recent days, which resulted in a severe injury to the extensor tendon of the second finger.

It needed a surgery and the tendon repair was successfully performed by a specialised team in the United States. In the next few days Sportiello will return to Italy to begin the rehabilitation process.

No timeframe for that process was given, but it is news that will like see Milan enter the market for a new back-up to Maignan, given how young Lorenzo Torriani is.

  1. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? I mean what else could cause this if not that he was on the PlayStation all night. 🙂
