Official: Marseille vs. AC Milan starting XIs – Rebic, Brahim Diaz and Giroud start

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has made four changes to the starting line-up to face Marseille from the team that beat Wolfsberger in midweek.

The Rossoneri were in rampant fashion during their victory over the Austrian Bundesliga side on Wednesday as they had five different goal scorers in a 5-0 win, but Pioli has changed every member of the attack for this game bar one.

The ‘first choice’ back four of Davide Calabria, Pierre Kalulu, Fikayo Tomori and Theo Hernandez will be in front of Mike Maignan, with Ismael Bennacer and Sandro Tonali pairing up in the double pivot.

Junior Messias will be on the right wing with Ante Rebic on the opposite flank, with Brahim Diaz the attacking midfielder playing behind Olivier Giroud who comes in after missing the Wolfsberger clash.

Official Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Calabria, Kalulu, Tomori, Theo Hernandez; Bennacer, Tonali; Messias, Diaz, Rebic; Giroud.

Bench: Tatarusanu, Mirante, Ballo Tourè, Adli, Bakayoko, Leao, Lazetic, Kjaer, Florenzi, Krunic, Gabbia.

Official Marseille XI (3-4-2-1):Blanco; Gigot, Mbemba, Balerdi; Clauss, Guendouzi, Rongier, Kolasinac; Gerson, Payet; Suárez.

Bench: Ngapandouetnbu, Van Neck; Caleta-Car, Lirola, Said Mmadi, Tavares, Touré; Ben Seghir, Elmaz, Gueye; Bakambu, de la Fuente, Dieng, Milik, Ünder.

  1. What’s the point of buying two attacking midfielders if you keep playing Brahim Diaz? Just put him in a bag and send him to Madrid. I forgot how annoying Pioli can be sometimes. Was really looking forward to seeing Adli against more competitive opponents.

    1. I believe he can do better, Maldini and Massara also have faith in his talent. Back then Leao and Tonali also don’t have a good season and they explode last season when given the opportunity and faith, let’s hope something similar happen

    2. Oh my god, it’s a preseason friendly for f’s sake. Everyone will play some. The point is not to win, but to try to work on what you have done in training in game situations.

      1. The guy can’t strike a ball. He lacks the biomechanics. All he can do is to put his head down, get lost in his own dribbles and then fall down looking at the referee. It’s a mystery how he ended up playing this sport. I would prefer not to see him play ever, not even in friendlies.

        1. And that’s the sort of hyperbole that makes it difficult to take an opinion seriously. He’s been at three of the world’s biggest clubs, could run rings around the majority of professional players and you suggest he shouldn’t be playing the sport?

          1. Exactly. That’s why all the clubs got rid of him. They were expecting him to develop certain skills but he never did. You have to be able to strike a ball properly to play this sport. And also to not fall down everytime an opponent comes near you. My prediction is that he will play lower league football in a few years. Let’s wait and see.

  2. Ahh.. I really love seeing Adli playing time more than brahim. Not because I hate brahim or he is not real milan player. Adli style remind me of milan when we have ronaldinho, pirlo, rui costa, or boban for controlling the attack in mid creatively. Hope he we fill permanent spot for starting 11th

  3. It’s a FRIENDLY game, also against French club, entire Milan board has already watched how Adli had played against French teams and these matches are made not only to see specific players, but also to see each and every player they think should be on the team.
Pioli wants to see 👀 Diaz improvement so that he can use him when somebody is injured or xyz happened.
    Just common sense.
If you don’t know why friendly matches are organized for, then simply keep silence and save the embarrassment.
I don’t believe any of you in the comments understand football better than Pioli

    1. I don’t think most of them understand more than an earthworm. But they sure do love to complain about how they would do it.

  4. I guess this is the formation is for Diaz, Messias and Rebic last chance saloon and to show the directors the lack of depth in the squad.
