Official: ‘Milan Futuro’ project announced after completion of Serie C registration

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have now also officially confirmed that they will have a second team in Serie C from next season onwards, but it will not be called simply ‘Milan U23’.

On their official website, the club have announced that they have formally received – following the decisions made by the Federal Council of the FIGC – approval for the registration of a B-team in the next Serie C Now season.

It will be a team centred around ‘talented young players’ which will be named ‘Milan Futuro’. The acceptance of the registration application has thus completed the roster of 60 teams that will participate in the Championship managed by Lega Pro in the 2024-25 season.

The project was created with ‘the main objective of enhancing the talent of young players’ who have grown up in the youth sector with the aim of helping their ‘physical-athletic maturation process’ by playing against adult teams.

Daniele Bonera will be the head coach of the side, a former defender who made 201 appearances for the Rossoneri over nine seasons and obtained the UEFA PRO qualification after attending the course in Coverciano in 2020.

As we outlined in our feature last night, the team will train at Milanello and will be in close contact with Paulo Fonseca’s first team, effectively forming one big single group.

The first official matches are scheduled for 11 and 18 August, when the first and second preliminary rounds of the Serie C Italian Cup will be played, while the start of the league season is scheduled for 25 August.

Tomorrow, the team will also know the group in which they will compete in the league and what teams they will face.

  1. This is great news and really good work by the management. But as far I know, these projects tend to yield very little players for the first team. Of course, in our case it’s a but different, because of Camadra, but people should lower their expectations

    1. I think you are overall right at least to some extent as people shouldn’t expect miracles.
When that is said some players will be more prepared for senior football if called upon by the first team and we can also prepare them better for loans in Serie B and A so they might play some more minutes when send out on loan. Then there is the factors of a lot players currently being let lose maybe a bit too prematurily as they simply hasn’t matured enough. There is also the monetary benefits of getting bigger transfer fees for players sold on.
This project will probably in the long run be beneficial but it will take some patience.
