Noah Okafor has not made an appearance for the Switzerland National Team for almost six months, but his recent performances for AC Milan mean he is in with a chance of minutes.

The past year has been undoubtedly difficult for Okafor. Under Stefano Pioli his minutes came largely from the substitute bench, and whilst he gained a reputation as a super sub, he had probably imagined more.

In Paulo Fonseca’s opening months, the same story has been occurring. Okafor’s minutes have been rare, and frequently from the bench. It was this way until Rafael Leao faced time on the substitutes bench, and Okafor was given a chance to impress.

Against Udinese, he was directly involved in the goal, giving the ball to Christian Pulisic who then assisted Samuel Chukwueze. Although he was sent back to the bench in the following game against Club Brugge, he made an impact from the bench instantly.

Unfortunately, he could not cause an impact against Napoli or Monza. However, he has at least shown Fonseca that he can be a valued member of the team, and he could have made the club rethink their stance on his future.

With the opportunities provided at Milan, he has once again been given a National Team call-up for the first time since the World Cup – where he did not make any appearances – as the Swiss National Team (via Milan News) confirmed.

His last minutes for the National Team came in June, so he will be hoping for a return to the pitch.

  1. Hmm. Seems again that playing a player in their position breeds success.

I wonder if Fofana not being called for France is indicative of Deschamps not believing he needs a 6.
