Ordine believes Milan choosing Fonseca would be ‘reminiscent’ of Giampaolo hire

By Oliver Fisher -

Stefano Pioli’s successor as AC Milan coach will most likely be Paulo Fonseca, and a word of warning has come from Franco Ordine.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported this morning that Milan and Fonseca have ‘chosen each other’ and in a few days everything could become official. There is no total agreement yet and no signatures, but Fonseca has always been in Milan’s mind and the esteem is mutual.

Ordine wrote in an editorial for Il Giornale (via Radio Rossonera) which states: “We will talk about it again in June in the vain hope that the wave of protest will calm down.”

The end of the current season was in fact characterised by protests and tensions from the fans , the risk is that of a rift with the fans which would continue into the next season too.

Then he highlighted a greater danger: “The move of Milan by RedBird is reminiscent of that of Milan by Elliott with Marco Giampaolo. It was the debut of the Boban-Maldini duo, even welcomed with emphasis thanks to the trust received from the two managers of the technical area.”

The story from there is well known: Giampaolo ended up lasting for just seven games and then was sacked, with Stefano Pioli arriving to take over, though he again was met with protests.

The journalist underlines the lack of consideration towards the ‘galvaniser of the environment’ Antonio Conte, and concludes: “The risk is precisely that of repeating the Giampaolo experience.”

  1. Giampaolo’s biggest problem was that he stuck to a system that did not suit Milan. Suso, who was Milan’s key player at the time, was never suited to his tactics at all.

    1. And he tried to turn Piatek into a complete Striker and in the process totally messed him Up.
If Piatek had kept scoring like he did the year before Giampaolo would have survived much longer.

  2. I think that many of us probably have nothing against Fonseca personally. He might become Giampaolo, he might become Pioli… He might be even more successful and we’ll eat our hats.

BUT there are better options available for this project with better certainties/attributes.

If there isn’t an optimal figure with vast European and Italian experience and you’re settling on Fonseca, then consider settling on Conte instead. He will build a backbone with these players that you can further upgrade on with a different coach once Conte moves on.

Again, just blows my mind that three minds all settled on Fonseca.

    1. Quite right, there is absolutely nothing against Fonseca, Lopetequi, or any other name.
However, it is fair to say, it is all about the ambition the management show when they appoint Pioli’s successor. He needs to be a better one, even in paper! And quite Frank Fonseca is nowhere near to what we hope for.
Managers are key of the development of any given squad, they set the tone, and increase the probability of success and meeting targets; for ACM the bar is always high.
Let’s not repeat the grief mistake Napoli did with Spaletti

    2. Yeah this is absolutely correct and at least personally it is making me hating the idea of Fonseca even when I don’t think he is a bad coach but when looking at Bayern’s or Chelsea’s candidate for a new manager it feels like Milan’s management is just lazy.
Take Maresca for example who may become the new Chelsea manager, I am sure his name would have been much more welcomed from Milan fans after a solid season with Leicester.
Milan had three names, one rejected from the fans, the second had issues with his club and the third is about to become the new manager and none of these three names gives Scudetto vibes.

    3. Agree 100%. For the sake of our milan, i hope Fonseca does well. True a lot better coaches out there. Would also like milan hire some good experienced management as well. Right now it feels like we have 3 right out of school, lightweight.

  3. I’m boiling, then I’d rather have Conte, and if articles are to be believed they overruled Zlatan. This is sick and embarrassing. I am disgusted beyond belief

  4. Bro, De Zerbi rejected Inter in the past. The only stumbling block that we had, 15M release clause, got terminated. why the f aren’t we signing him? plays 4-2-3-1, but with actual midfield and build-up. He makes youth into world stars… SIGN HIM

    1. De Zerbi might ask for quality players and the management doesn’t want that. De Zerbi might also get mad. Unlike Fonseca who will only say “Yes, sir.” and “Your wish is my command, sir”.

  5. Exactly 1000%

The reason behind this option everyone can see it. Economically…

The club just don’t want to spend money in a coach with high ambitions as our beloved club deserve..

I thought that IBRA could make a difference. But this is another think to thing about what Ibra is doing there and why Maldini was sacked. They want people in the club to say yes sir. That’s it.

Since I Love AC MILAN. I will protest against Cardinale as long he stays at the club.

    #CARDINALEOUT

  6. He says that Fonseca will be the next Giampaolo who lasted only 7 games but he is promoting Conte, who if hired might quit before the season starts because Milan signed only 9 of the 10 players he asked for

    1. Stellini’s comments couple of weeks ago came out to tame these kind of fears but I guess they were not enough to push this lazy management to even talk to Conte.

Conte is definitely interested in Milan’s job but I bet this stupid management will hire Rudy Garcia before thinking of someone like Conte.

  7. I see this as a lateral move, sure he is Pioli with hair. Pioli has done great things and some not great things, with Milan, the question to me is is his style of coaching (play and training) the cause of the Muscular injuries we have been having? That is were our issues start. This year at least we had a capable backup keeper.

I would have liked to see conte as well as coach, he would have been great. But I do not think he is a fit with this ownership. Look what happened with Maldini, he spoke out about needs for the team and was let go the next day. Do you really think conte would keep quiet, I am curious how long he will be at Napoli with ADL, it will be interesting to see how those two personalities work together.

  8. What a load of rubbish. Conte is a dinosaur in football. He’s a coach who like Mourinho time has come and gone. Only tactics that cannot compete with modern football.

As for De Zerbi, his team doesn’t know how to defend. De Zerbi would have been a Giampaolo like disaster.

Only Sergio Conceição and possibly Christophe Galtier would have been a better option to Paulo Fonseca. But Fonseca is a good choice.

      1. I don’t know, man. I hope you’re right. I’m afraid that under Fonseca our psychologically frail core won’t strengthen. Whereas for example Conte could beat the winning mentality into them… I mean that too is speculation of course.

          1. Supposedly Conte’s wish list to go to Napoli includes Kessie, Lukaku and Skriniar…. hahaha

Good Luck with that from ADL. LMAO!!!

    1. Yes. Fonseca is great choice. He can make game exciting by using his zorro mask. Don’t be dinosaur, we need modern entertainment here. Cardinal has done good job bringing spirit of hollywood to italy league.

    2. Thank you Zion. De Zerbi’s team is terrible on defense. As to Conte, Tottenham is better under their new manager. As to the new manager, I know nothing. Has anyone watched how his teams play? Otherwise, it just typical blog talk- no substance

      1. Why people expect Brighton to have the best defense? De Zerbi got them way over where they suppose to be, defended way better then they suppose to be even in the season they “did bad” he technically did good, he did insane the year before, only reason why this year look bad. Brighton have no business performing they way they did under De Zerbi

  9. RDZ style of play doesn’t suit the we have. He plays positional football that doesn’t make use of our runners (theo, leao, pull).

If criteria are 1. can work wt youth, 2. can work wt management, 3. knows Serie A, 4. has new football ideas, then best choice is Motta. He uses full width of the pitch switching plays from left to right… that’s the squad we have! Bonus if he brings zirkzee.

  10. But hey… The previous management learned from the Giampaolo-mistake and brought us Zlatan & Kjaer who then got us the scudetto. Maybe we need to take another catastrophic nose-dive before they see how things are and realize you can’t win scudetto without decent players and then will rise from the ashes again.

Or maybe we’ll end up in Serie B.

    1. Previous management wanted to win not just scudetto, but UCL as well. This management aims for 4th position. Big difference my friend. As fans, We should be prepared for ultimate level of the cheapest mediocrity.

  11. jery’s goal is to get money as much as he can to build stadium, even if less trophy. he’s more like property person rather than sport person. any clubs can get less or many trophies in 10 or 20 years, but stadium maybe only 1 in 100 years. he want to be legend & a monument (stadium it is) unfortunately not in sporting area
