Youssouf Fofana has been a key player under all three of his AC Milan head coaches so far, and it seems Massimiliano Allegri is trying to build the midfielder up.
Milan tried desperately to bring Fofana to the club last summer; it seemed that they would have to wait until the summer just gone to land the midfielder initially. However, they eventually got a deal done, and it was worth it.

So far, the midfielder has played 54 Serie A games of a possible 61; those numbers are hardly matched by anyone else in the squad over the past two seasons. It says an awful lot about the Frenchman, indeed.
Fofana’s recovery
He, of course, has made a few mistakes during his time with the club so far, most notably against Genoa. However, he has not given up, and Allegri has worked with him to overcome that game and become even stronger, as Franco Ordine told MilanNews.
“I point out the Fofana case: the Frenchman ended up “hit by a train” as they say psychologically, after that empty door error against Genoa. He even had to delete social media for the insults he received.
“The boy has a very fragile character and so Allegri kept him out of the Bologna game to protect him and allow him to recharge his batteries. Fofana played perhaps one of the best games of the season. I hope that sooner or later, he will also manage to score goals to complete the redemption.”

He’s error prone in possession, and defensively his positioning could better. He excels at recovering possession all over the pitch. I think it’s misguided to assume he’s going to be a 15 goal scorer, but it would be equally misguided to not let him roam as he has a knack for showing up in dangerous positions. As part of a midfield rotation he’s a net positive imo but he needs to improve his passing and shooting for sure
The man can carry the ball and regain possession. His weakness has been making mistakes in Milan’s own half of the pitch, and these are huge mistakes, and he cannot score to save his life. He certainly has a weak mind, in the sense that the weight of the shirt and the objectives at the club make him lose focus, and he fumbles at the most important times.
Yep, fragile character. Go on and have another 15 mental breakdowns without hurting Milan’s results, and then p.iss off please.

There are very few mentality monsters out there playing football these days.
The current crop of footballers are nothing compared to players of even just 7 or 10 years ago. Players like Modric are a dying breed.
It’s because we are a weak society bringing up a bunch of nancies. Good times create weak people, weak people create bad times. That’s the part of the cycle our civilisation is at currently.

Actually, now more than ever we need a Pirlo to evade pressing and to launch a quick counter with his long ball. His freekick is also a killer.
Fofana adds more to the game than Ricci 👌
Fofana gets to play nearly all the games, Ricci does not. Not really a fair comparison now is it? Same could be said about Saladmaker and Athekame or De Winter and Tomori or Leao and Nkunku.
Players need playing time to get into a good rythm. Nkunku got better the more he played. Barthesagi, Athekame, De Winter… all improved after getting the chance to play more.
So maybe give Fofana a little less playing time and Ricci some more. Although both have different characteristics on the field. We don’t really have a good alternative for Fofana. Ricci is a different kind of player. That’s why Fofana plays so much.
I don’t fancy the player but I know he’s functional to Allegri’s system 🤷♂️
