Parma 2-1 AC Milan: Rossoneri suffer first defeat under Fonseca

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan continued their winless start to the season as they were beaten 2-1 by Parma at the Stadio Ennio Tardini on Saturday night.

The home side took the lead within two minutes as Dennis Man was on hand to tap home a teasing cross by Emanuele Valeri, but Milan thought that they were back in business when Christian Pulisic equalised from close range.

The Rossoneri were pushing for a winning goal but got caught at the other end when Pontus Almqvist squared for Matteo Cancellieri who put the hosts 2-1 up, and that would be enough to earn them the three points.

It means that Milan are stuck on one point after two games and have not made an ideal start to the 2024-25 season, especially with Lazio and Inter to come in the next three games.

Paulo Fonseca made five changes to the starting line-up that drew with Torino as Strahinja Pavlovic, Theo Hernandez, Tijjani Reijnders, Yunus Musah and Noah Okafor all came into the side.

Milan found themselves behind inside two minutes as the half-changed defence totally fell asleep. A switch of play over to the left flank found Valeri, who outpaced Davide Calabria and provided a perfect low ball across the box to Dennis Man and the Romanian applied a powerful finish having beaten Theo to the ball.

The opening 20 minutes was nothing short of a nightmare for Milan as they were all at sea at the back. Calabria and Theo continued to get beaten down the flanks, with numerous dangerous crosses flying across the fact of goal without being tapped in. This was all while the Rossoneri failed to generate any attacking pressure.

The first real move that Milan put together was midway through the first half when Christian Pulisic surged down the right and the ball was cut back to Musah, whose shot took a looping deflection and landed a few yards wide.

Milan had their best spell of the first half around the half-four mark as several chances went begging. First a jinking run from Leao got him to the byline and his feed found Noah Okafor who fired straight at Suzuki, then Reijnders did well to drive towards goal with a dart to the left and to the right, yet his low drive flashed across goal when it was begging to be turned in.

The one-way traffic continued after that, and Pavlovic – who had a header turned over the bar from Suzuki minutes earlier – rose to meet a corner from the right side and got a good connection yet it just went wide of the near post.

Parma provided a reminder of the threat that they pose on the counter, and Sohm should have perhaps done better with a shot from the edge of the box after a three against two counter-attack when Milan had lost possession.

Pavlovic had picked up a yellow card for a foul while the home side were trying to break and he had to time his intervention to perfect when he dived in to stop Man who thought he was through on goal. Thankfully he did get it spot on, and then moments later Parma hit the post after Maignan came for a ball and didn’t get it, though the whistle might have gone for a foul.

The final chance of the half went to the Crociati as they again took advantage of Milan’s high line, breaking through Mihăilă who could have pulled the trigger early but invited pressure from Tomori, before Maignan stuck out a leg to save his low shot.

Milan were inches away from levelling the game within a minuet of the restart as Reijnders rattled the crossbar with a shot from 25 yards that took a slight nick and almost dipped under the woodwork. Moments later, Okafor hooked a volley over the bar from a Calabria cross, in a similar fashion to the equaliser against Torino.

Parma thought that they had doubled their lead when a low cross from the left was met by the outstretched boot of Bonny, who diverted it past Maignan at the near post yet the flag rightly went up as he was a few yards offside. Just 60 seconds later, a counter ended with Man cutting in onto his right foot and curling one just wide.

In the 66th minute, Milan did finally get themselves level and it was the best move of the game to that point. Leao made a brilliant darting run in off the left, feeding Theo’s run in behind then receiving the ball back and squaring to Pulisic, who just had to tap into an empty net.

However, Parma re-took the lead with 13 minutes left and it came after a sloppy giveaway from Leao. A ball out to the left found Almqvist who simply had to roll a ball past Tomori and Pavlovic to Cancellieri, and the first-time finish got the better of Maignan.

Emerson Royal and Youssouf Fofana came on before Parma’s second goal, and Samuel Chukwueze was brought on after that for Pulisic with a few minutes left.

    1. This “High-press” thing is not working. Parma just played the long balls and we sufferd. I don’t even wanna think how the better teams will run pass us.

This was not a good game.

Pavlovic’s first 16 minutes were shaky, but after the nerves was gone he showed what great asset he will be this year. Great buy!

RLC should NEVER play as a 10 again. Was he even on the field?

And that pass from Leao for 2-1… broooo!!!

Fonseca needs to wake up! This is not ligue 1!

      1. Parma were not just paying long balls, they our playnmikan after studying out midfield and defence , every counter beat out backline. We mostly attacked from the left so they attack us from the left and centre. RCL is shit and need to go I dont care the price he add nothing to the game.

Fonseca could have brought in saleamakers and put Pulisic behind the striker at second half.

  1. Last week I said:
“At least it’s clear very early.

We still have time to get 4-5 new players and a manager.”

Now we have much less time and it’s obvious it’s 5 (we don’t have a RB)

    1. But of course the solution is always new players never the coach or management of the club…people need to stop drinking water as the fluoride sucks the intelligence out of their brain

  2. I’m starting to think that we bribed those teams in the US Tour that’s why they will allowed us to look good.
Because whatever we did there, I don’t see any of it so far.
(this comment too quick is becoming really annoying)

        1. Haha nice to meet you mate, good to see it’s not just me. I think certain posters here are either part of the administration or certainly aligned to and therefore can’t be criticised…the difference my love is for the club and the bag]dge, not this or any previous management, I’ve supported Milan since 1988, I’ve played the game to a good standard and do coaching now for kids, I guess I don’t suit the modern day FIFA playing statistic types

    1. Good one! 😂😂😂
In USA a whole different bunch of players was in the starting 11, which is shipped out (loaned or sold). No italian core / base, no Italian league success. Simple. But I would be considered racist or nationalist (I am not Italian)

  3. Ugly ownership, ugly coach, ugly signings, ugly game, ugly result. And my god what ugly jerseys.

We’re slowly sliding back into the banter era, hoping we somehow get new ownership before it gets too bad, hopefully this upcoming season of disaster will scare off Redbird and they sell to Saudi owners who will at least splurge or at least competent ownership.

  4. Glad I canceled my Serie A broadcast subscription the moment Fonseca was selected as our coach. Any second thoughts were immediately put to rest when our “goalscorer” became Morata, and the much-needed improvement over Calabria was Emerson Royal. Hopefully, it doesn’t take long to appoint Bonera (it’s hard to be worse than Fonseca), and we can at least make it to 4th place.

  5. Same problem we had under Pioli.
The coach sees his own squad, but doesn’t put any effort studying the opponents and choosing a formation that is suitable to that particular game.

I just don’t understand the coaches’ fixation with controlling the ball possession and pressing high, with little to no defensive effort.

Everyone is trying to copy Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona without having players suitable for it, and at a time when Guardiola himself is changing.

  6. Pioli will be back as interim coach in September if Fonseca plays the team like this.

For €100 we could’ve got Gyökeres and just left the rest. With another coach we would be better off with only Gyökeres.

    1. This!!!
I don’t know about the scudetto race because it’s only 2 games.
But conceding 4 goals in two matches against 2 mid-low table team is really worrying.
And clearly this gerry management knows nothing about mercato except buying cheap players and even lowballing their previous club

  7. This “High-press” thing is not working. Parma just played the long balls and we sufferd. I don’t even wanna think how the better teams will run pass us.

  8. Same lack of off-the-ball movement. I just hate watching players standing and waiting for the ball. It’s like there were 5 attackers just standing close to the opponent’s box waiting for the ball. I don’t know if that was Fonsy’s instruction or the players have gone into panic mode thereby returning to default settings: Pioliball. Also I feel like this team isn’t made for stars. They all played great football during preseason when the likes of Leao and Theo were on holiday and I always knew that there’d be a disruption in the chemistry the moment the stars returned. Then the high line has to be adjusted. I can imagine Inter licking their lips watching that high line. Lastly, Jovic isn’t as terrible as people make him to be: all strikers are useless when there’s no supply. That one is easy to see. Oh lest I forget, RLC needs to step up amd use that big body. I don’t remember what friendly match that was but he was pretty decent when moved further back the pitch. What do these coaches see that we don’t see that makes them believe that RLC is an AM?

Fonsy go back to what you did in preseason and stop panicking. Where’s the fluid passing we saw with players coming to demand for the ball? Now they’re all just ball watching and I don’t want to believe Fonsy told them to do that. Anyway, league titles aren’t won in the second match so it’s too early to hit the panic button.

    1. Performed better in pre season? Same as the previous years, one our main problems is mentality. Just can’t deliver when it matters the most. Attitude on the field. Can’t handle pressure. Etc etc.

They brought Ibra back was also to handle this problem.

  9. What do u expect wen u neglect the son and bring another person from another country to manage your home… Maldini should be bring back… If this management really needs success

  10. I must be honest 4-2-3-1 is our lineup but the mistake and error Fonseca made was to used Loftus cheek, Loftus cheek is not an attacking midfield we need an attacking midfield if we must succeed let build our attacking trend with pulisic and liberali please let’s sell of Loftus and tomori is responsible for Acmilan failure

    1. Right now I’d put Reijnders in the no10 and bolster the pivot. Bennacer and another. I suspect Bennacer knows he’s off though which is ludicrous as despite his dip inform he’s still the best we have there.

      1. You could blame the players if say we played Napoli or Inter. But Parma….. , Fonseca is to blame, thank goodness I had to work today, otherwise I would have smashed my TV. I mean we finished 2nd. last year, Inter was hot and our losses against bottom of the table teams killed us ,but Parma up from relegation, please. time to crack a Peroni…. or more

  11. WHERE ARE ALL THE OKAFOR LOVERS NOW. He missed a lot of chances today and also why did fonseca wait till the 85th min to sub in jovic and chuku. i am speechless

  12. 2.38 pm in Toronto this Milan just spoiled everything for me. The salary of all the players in the pitch for Parma including their coach annually is not close to Leao annual pay yet we can see. The problem of this team is a mediocre management who knows nothing about football except to back bite Maldini…..Ibrahimovic is just there as a show boy without power and lastly a coach who knows nothing absolutely nothing or rather second seria B division coach.
Must we concede in every game? Two matches 4 goals. It’s a shame

  13. Worst Milan team I saw in ages, they play like sh*t!
    All new signing are cr@p!
Say all what you like about the new owner, from signing players and appointing new coach, they have no clue!
Yes, we’ll win something this year, it’s the “healthy financial club of the year”.
Which no fans give a rat @ss about it, except for some ‘financial advisor fans’ in this site, because non of sporting club fans will care about this boll0cks!

  14. Gonna get an ulcer supporting this club 🙁

Hopefully the players and coach has so much pride that they are downright ashamed of themselves for making Parma look like a bunch of world beaters instead of a recently promoted Serie B team.

  15. Pavlovic can be good for us. The only bright spot.
This D is playing like Fonseca has them confused about their positions. Even Theo seems mentally out of it.

  16. What went wrong imo:
4-2-3-1 with RLC at top (opt for 433 v Lazio imo)
“High press/high line” was exploited by Parma through long balls
    Sluggish fullbacks (no comment…)
    Leao decision-making was horrible

Overall, though it seems our defence was the issue, it’s more so our midfield.

  17. Simply pathetic , how did RLC play the full 90 minutes , Calabria was targeted from the first second.

How hard is it to note that Theo has gone forward someone needs to cover his position, Okafor and Musah are not starters, especially at this time, Pavlovic saved us on so many occasions, I would give Tomori the benefit of the doubt as it’s the first time he has played with Pavlovic, so they did not have that understanding.

But we need a real striker, if they don’t spend then it will be a long season.

Parma just hit long balls and stayed compact and we had no answer, we just chased shadows and made mistakes after mistake.

Spend even if we have to go for Osimen, a striker that gives the opposition something to think about and not go all out, Parma had no fear against us they knew our weaknesses and fully exploited them .

Fonseca’s team selection, Fonseca’s tactics, he has got to take full responsibility for what happened on Parma

    1. And now imagine the same thing but we face Inter, not Parma. Maybe that 6-0 record we’re so proud of would finally be broken.

  18. Sadly not a single player showed up today…Pavlovic showed glimpses of what we can expect from him. Emerson displayed some confidence which we hope he can build on going forward. Parma gave us a good lesson on how a quick transition can work in your favour as well as how being compact can snuff out the opposition attack. We can take a leaf out of their pages. All the preseason hype is now n distant memory with the ghost of season past strongly rearing its ugly head…the prospects look ominous.

  19. My first commend after years brothers…
Theo in defence was very poor classic
    Serbian great debut
    Mike good game i think
    Royal the clown
    RLC very poor
    Tijjani only offensive good today
    Leao he can do better
The defence problem came from last year, its the same actually…
I am not so soon against the couch…
*Dea 20 M for Bellanova and we 18 M for brazilian clown older and with bigger contract ?
25 years jail for the man who give the vital ok for this…

  20. ac milan made poor signings cheap player morata did have a good debut and pavlovic to fofana hasent play over a month but where was even emerson at the second goal, i am brazilian my self but what we need is a better rb than calabria not a bench player
