Journalist Carlo Pellegatti has expressed concern about AC Milan’s strategy of reinvesting (or not reinvesting) all the money from sales.
With Malick Thiaw expected to join Newcastle United in a €40m operation, Sky are among the sources to report that Milan’s proceeds would go above €150m for the summer. The other big exits were Tijjani Reijnders (€55m, to Manchester City) and Theo Hernandez (€25m, to Al-Hilal).

However, at the moment Milan have only spent less than half what they have received. This percentage will increase with the signings still to come, but more departures could be completed as well, like that of Yunus Musah to Nottingham Forest.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Pellegatti reacted to the news that Milan have sealed a €20m deal for Koni De Winter to replace Thiaw, of which an excerpt can be seen below.
“It’s not my fault if we didn’t make it to the Champions League, we can’t just sell everyone because we need money, and besides, a lot of players have arrived.
“If I sell for 40 [million euros], I buy for 40, not for 20. When you bring in 20, you look for someone worth 10, that’s not right.”

We have no European football. We will have a revenue shortfall. If we replace players with better more committed players, what is the problem?
You can cover that shortfall with 70 million euros over three years. We are profitable three years straight. With Tijjani’s sale, last year is balanced. We have 70 million, plus the other sales to invest, increased sponsorship money as well. Central defense has been a weakness. They need to invest more than 20 million, especially with only 4 defenders, Gabbia was the most consistent and we will need 6 CB this year. Pavlovic and Tomori are liabilities more often than not. Gabbia has bis moments where his is not so great as well.
De Winter is a solid signing. He isn’t enough to increase the level of that position. Especially not with an extra one needed to shore up the central defense. Our RB is completely bare of any viable options for a CL level squad even in Italy as well. We have the money and those positions are atill not addressed with friendlies done. All the preparation made with Thiaw has been thrown out the window. That can cost us CL again since we are going into the season with a team that is no prepared than last year, we dropped points for that very reason. It isn’t worth 40 million, or 20 million euros in gains.
We lacked cohesion because coaches had insufficient time for preparation due to last minute signings for starting positions. Those have to be sealed early. This is a bad move. Unless you bring in an irrefutable star player who can change your team, these moves shouldn’t happen at this time of the window.
This is ignoring the fact we are without European football and thus will have a revenue shortfall and we had prior debt.

He’s right. If u want a good and better result, you must spend much as u sell. Milan is a big club. Create for title race, not a mediocre club. Have a profit with an average player is not good for a target to champions league. If italian have 4 slot, leave itnro juventus, inter, napoli and roma. They do better business than us.

Because you sold a defender for 40m doesn’t mean you must spend 40m for his replacement. Tonali’s sale providing the funds for Pulisic and Reijnders prove this point.
Tonali’s sale weakened a weakened position. Reijnders and Pulisic, as good as they were, weren’t enough to make up for his loss. The team results speak for themselves, over individual accolades. It upset the balance and chemistry that has yet to be recovered. The team was poorly constructed. Again, a central defender, a weak spot, has been sold, inherently washing out all the pre season work they did there.
It takes at least 2 seasons to establish a good enough chemistry to contend for titles domestically and be competitive in Europe when you buy the cream of the crop. So when players come and go, and many purchases are liabilities, inconsistent, unestablished, you pay dearly collectively. If you buy midlevel players, and an average of one very good player who delivers per 3 yesr cycles…there will be hell to pay for it.
Nothing was washed out by selling a central defender who arguably wasn’t even a starter to begin with. You are assuming. And Thiaw was a consistent weak spot last season.
It’s utter madness not taking 40 million for him. In addition, there was an attempt to sell him earlier in the summer for potentially half that. So he wasn’t really part of the plans to start with.
De Winter is better than Thiaw. And you will see that soon enough.
Outside of Reijnders and Pulisic, everyone was a consistent weak spot last season. That’s what three coaches at a team in one year will do to you .
And I approve of what is being done. I’ve slammed his management plenty of times. I want Furlani out. Tare though is doing the right moves and Allegri as coach, Ricci, Jashari, De Winter and so forth are all signings I like.

With the money from the Tonali sale Milan bought RLC, Reijnders and Pulisic.

With Tonali they finished 5th, without 2nd. The team results do speak for themselves.
Without Tonali they had more points and scored more goals than any year over the last 10+ years.
Last season Milan problems were more about poor professionalism and lack of discipline because of lack of leadership than because the midfield was weakened 2 years earlier with Tonali leaving.
Milan didn’t sell Tonali last summer but 2 summers ago. Just because Tonali was suspended from playing football doesn’t mean that a whole season of football was erased for everyone else.
To add on top of what you said. Tonali sale in retrospect was fabulous move for the club, we have to be honest. Yes, he loves the club and the fans love him. He is a great player. However – everyone would have eaten him alive if he was suspended from football for a full year while playing for us. Obviously he needed to change the environment to deal with his mental issues and I hope he managed to do so. He left not only without hurting the club, but also providing funds that brought key players to our current team. Also he takes 2 or 3 times larger salary than he would in Italy, so let’s not pretend he was unhappy with the deal.

Theo on a bad day was as good as this one at his recent best, who had a significant injury, we don’t even know if we will be able to rely on him to show up period. Theo wouldn’t cost much nore to retain over the span of the contract even at the numbers he requested. It would be 2 million more on the books for the next 5 years. For a known quantity, even when nit at his best. He would stay healthy, because he always has been and would benefit from being on a more balanced team too.

Are we better than last year? We should be just because we finally have a competent coach and system – so results will improve. But we finished 8th so not a huge leap of faith to finish better than that.

The point is to replace the outgoing player with a player that is around the same level with the player you sold, and if you can do it for half the money makes it even better.

Another great point. Get a Thiaw replacement for half the money we got, and add the balance for another position that we need real quality in. But no, people complain that we didn’t spend the whole 40 on a CB and then if we do will complain when we bring in a 30M striker instead of a 50M one.

WE are earning almost 60M to 80M less in revenues for this coming season because we won’t have any prize money from UCL. This is due to the failures of Ibra, Furlani and Moncada from last season.
In order to maintain our current level, sacrifices have to be made. That means to lower COST by as much, if not MORE than the missing revenues, OR to find ways to earn more money than we spend. So far we have sold around 148M worth of players, and bought around 98M worth of replacement. We still have to find a RB and a rotational ST.
If we manage to do that with a net ZERO spending, that means Redbird don’t have to give us the usual 50M in transfer budget every year. We can use that budget to cover for most, if not all of the missing revenues for this year (the 60M to 80M mentioned before). Then if we improve results from last season and earn a bit more prize money, we would end the 25/26 season already in a financially healthy spot.
We don’t want to run this club into the ground like Berlusconi did where he was forced to weaken the team and ended up selling to some Chinese fraud. Being Financially responsible, whilst maintaining a decent level of players on the pitch is a must if we want to play in Europe next season after qualifying for it.
FFP exists and is not going away, as dumb as the rules are, so we have to follow them. And without owning our own stadium, earning revenues can only take us so far.
Inter did it another way, by cheating the system with massive debt and buying big players to win prize money, but that was not sustainable. Once those one-off good seasons don’t happen just one time and they they have even one bad year, then the regular money they can earn will not be enough to cover for their massive expenses/debts. That’s how their Chinese owner ended up losing the Club to a hedge fund, because he could not repay the money he owed to them.
If you are not financially responsible in Italy and you don’t own your own stadium, your club can financially end up dead (we have seen so many instances of that, the latest one Brescia).

Oaktree having money and assets means nothing because those are assets that they will not use on Inter Milan. Look at their current mercato. They can’t even buy anybody without selling first.

Thiaw was worth €9m when we bought him, there were players worth €40m but Milan doesn’t do business that way, instead we buy young talents, prospects who don’t cost too much and watch them appreciate in value.

Milan leveraged on certain parameters like the proximity to the start date of the season to negotiate a good price for the deal.
Milan acted not interested in selling so more money will be offered for the player, tge same tactics being used for the Musah’s case.
