There are likely to be big changes after Italy failed to qualify for another World Cup, and Massimiliano Allegri could be a target.
Italy faced a do-or-die game against Bosnia and Herzegovina away from home on Tuesday night, knowing that they needed to win in order to book their place in the tournament this summer. Things went well as Moise Kean punished the hosts for an early error.
However, everything went south after Alessandro Bastoni’s red card in the 41st minute. Bosnia equalised inside the final 20 minutes and they would then go on to win on penalties thanks to four immaculate spot kicks.
Carlo Pellegatti published his weekly column for MilanNews in which he offered a reflection on Italy’s failure to make a third straight World Cup, revealing a worry about Allegri.
“I wrote the second part of this piece this afternoon. I’d decided to leave out the opening, hoping to celebrate the long-awaited qualification for a World Cup that we’ve been missing for 12 years,” he began.
“Instead, even the computer keys seem stiff, difficult to press, while over there, on the TV, all we hear are the cheers of Bosnia’s fans. It seems incredible, but we have to wait until 2030, a year that seems so far away.
“It’s so far away. It’s been a curse, ever since the draw that assigned us the two-legged away game in these play-offs. Everything seemed easy after Kean’s goal, then the sending off that changed the course of a match that seemed well on its way.
“Kean’s chance that drove us crazy. Then one of the best goalkeepers in the world, already a protagonist, faced formidable and infallible penalty takers.
“The World Cup is a celebration, a celebration of football. However, we won’t be at this celebration. Instead, a sad summer awaits us. I won’t don the accuser’s robe and point the finger at the guilty. This isn’t the time, when everything outside seems silent. Italy lost to a team ranked above 70. IT’S UNBEARABLE!
“I don’t know what will happen next for the Azzurri bench. A few months ago, they told me: ‘Be careful, they might ask Massimiliano Allegri if we’re eliminated!’. WILL THIS HAPPEN? AND IF SO, WHAT WILL MAX’S RESPONSE BE? A reason to sleep badly on this long, sad night.”

Im sorry, as much as we can commend Allegri for his past success and the good job he is doing for Milan rn, Italy trying to have him as coach would be them Not learning a single thing in the past 16 years. My word, the FIGC is really allergic to modern football, young talent, and anything other than catenacio.
They need something fresh, no more defensive, rely on older players football
He’s the most successful coach in Serie A.
Your preferred style of play is irrelevant.
I wouldn’t want him to go just as Milan have managed to return to some modicum of stability but he’s the obvious choice.
The issue is that there’s not many Italians playing in Serie A because Italy has some of the highest number of transfers of any leagues in Europe.
But fans love transfers so that’s unlikely to change.
“He’s the most successful coach in Serie A.”
He had the best squad by miles each time he won the scudetto. Look at the Milan roster when they won. They would have won the scudetto even without a coach.
What? Deschamps won how many titles by playing low block with counter attacks? Compare to “modern playing” nations. 😂😂😂
deschamps has one of the most stacked national teams in history…
i could coach mbappe and the bunch to a world cup final
Of course you would. Clown. 😂😂😂
And having a better team usually means you can play attacking football, yet Deschamps decided he wants to win titles, not be a clown.
They should go for cup kings inzaghi or Italiano
Good shout.
Italy must be stick with gattuso. Italy need revolution on his regulations about young Italian players. They should learn from DFB – Germany after European championship 1996 like Sammer + Moeller still playing, they change about league regulation. Goetze, deisler, Musiala etc it’s little example from that rules.
What did Italy expect honestly? Aside from the fact that they are not producing great talents anymore, they appoint a coach in Gattuso that not a single Serie A side would hire as their Manager.
if FIGC consider Allegri it shows they have learned nothing from the past 16 years.
Who is Milan’s fans, critical of Allegri, actual preferred coach? I’ve literally never seen a single well structured suggestion as to who will bring better results with the current squad while deploying a more attacking style of play (and especially – why).
We are happy with Allegri being Milan’s head coach, we are not complaining. The Italy NT would go nowhere if they appointed Allegri though. Italy does not need reinforcement on the old values, it needs a revolution. Gattuso is still the best choice for them but the idiot actually vowed to leave the job if Italy would not qualify. Theatrical and dramatic.
Italiano or De Zerbi would be ideal in my mind but realistic I can’t say. Ultimately no good coach wants to attached themselves to the dumpster fire that is the FIGC. The fact gravina wasn’t fired years ago speaks volume. Also as deftly pointed out by Marco Grimaldi, Italy’s gov hasn’t made any meaningful investment in sports in decades.
I was referring to Milan. As an Italy fan, I just hope the corrupted people in charge finally resign. Without that, it’s meaningless to talk coaches. If anything, I’d actually prefer for Rino to leave and avoid further BS.
Why hiring Gatuso in the first place, when there are better coaches?
He is not a good coach.
No one else was willing to ruin their career taking a job that was deemed to be unsuccessful.
