Photo: Why Maignan was spotted way out of position just before Milan’s winner vs. Empoli

By Isak Möller -

Shortly after the game between AC Milan and Empoli last night, which finished 1-0 in favour of the Rossoneri, pictures of Mike Maignan went viral. The goalkeeper was spotted way out of position just before the opener.

Although it looked strange at first, the reason behind his position (see photo below) actually makes a lot of sense. As Empoli’s goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was setting up his wall, Maignan wanted to do the same but for Milan’s attacking wall.

By standing in that position, therefore, Maignan was able to guide his teammates into the best position to block Vicario’s view. Olivier Giroud failed to convert the free-kick but as we know, the rebound was converted by Pierre Kalulu.
