Pioli admits there is work to be done: “We need to raise the level of our performances” – video

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli believes that his side are learning from their mistakes, stressing that a top performance will be needed to get a result against Atletico Madrid.

Pioli spoke to Milan TV on the eve of the game between the Rossoneri and the LaLiga champions, with his comments transcribed by MilanNews and translated below.

Pioli spoke on the eve of Milan-Atletico. These are his words:

“The performances were certainly positive. The difficulties we encountered demonstrated the difficulties of the Italian league but we won difficult games showing good qualities and a good mentality that shows that we are on the pitch with concentration,” he said.

“Now let’s think about tomorrow’s match. The first one in the Champions League did not bring a positive result and tomorrow night is an important match against a strong team and we need to raise the level of our performances.

“We have always been good at analysing our performances and trying to improve the positives and not making the mistakes that led us to lose the game in Liverpool. When the levels rise, mistakes are paid for. We have to show a top performance and with great attention because we play against a mature team and very ready to capitalise on the mistakes of the opponent.”

A crowd of over 38,000 are expected at San Siro to see the team’s first home Champions League game since 2014, which fittingly was against Atletico in the Round of 16.

On the support from the fans, Pioli added: “They are giving us incredible enthusiasm and support and it will be like that tomorrow evening. We must take the energy from them to put on the field. We are young in this competition but we can supply this youth with ideas, organisation and enthusiasm.”
