Pioli bemoans ‘frenetic’ Milan who ‘committed naivety’ that was ‘paid for at a high price’

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli was eager to express his disappointment as his side dropped points against bottom of the league Salernitana.

Milan got the early lead inside the opening 10 minutes through a Junior Messias goal, but the home side were resolute and they got themselves level when Bonazzoli scored his sixth goal of the season by seizing on a Mike Maignan error of judgement.

Salernitana then went 2-1 up in the second half as Milan Djuric netted his third of the campaign via an excellent header, and though Ante Rebic’s shot from distance levelled it at 2-2 that’s how the game would finish.

Pioli spoke to Sky after the game and reflected on the lacklustre performance from his side, with his words transcribed by MilanNews and translated below.

On the absence of Ibra and the errors: “The team did well with and without Ibra, so I don’t impute anything to him. We weren’t good from a technical point of view and we committed naivety that was then paid for at a high price.”

On the performance: “We started well, taking the lead, but then we lost our clarity. We were frenetic and despite the opportunities to get back in the lead, we didn’t succeed. When we don’t manage to play for Milan it’s always a lost opportunity.

“We are disappointed, me and the boys. We approached it and prepared it well. The subsequent mistakes are not ours. They are plays that prevented us from playing our usual clean football.”

On the mistakes: “The approaches of the two halves were right. Then some technical and position errors ruined everything. We conceded too much. But when you concede 2 goals it is obvious that it becomes difficult to win. We wanted a lot more. But we will learn from our mistakes to try to win the next one.”

  1. IM sorry to say this coach, but you already know most relegated team Will play very defensive and depend counter atack and yet you don’t have tactic to prevent first goal from counter atack , your defense line too high . Your tactic win versus big team that play atacking style because in early 1-30min start you shocking them with fast pressing atack but that don’t work in small team with parking truck 10 player in behind

    1. All salernitana goals was because of Mike and Tomori blunder, not because Pioli made a bad strategy.

It’s easy to critique and blame Pioli because that’s what brainless fans can do 🤦‍♂️. Blame the coach and ask Milan management to replace him with a new one. Rinse and repeat 🤦‍♂️

  2. Exactly. Also, against a team like salernitana, you should be giving youngsters a chance. Maybe a primavera striker gets game time, Maldini starts, Ballo-toure/Bakayako gets game time to see if they can do anything. Could start Kalulu/Gabbia instead of Romangoli.
Tbh we were lucky to get away with a draw, and management can go have a long hard think about the fact that Franck Ribery, at 2 billion years old, is better than Messias and Saelemakers combined

    1. You made a good point, I think Calabria is weak defensively, and Florenzi is much better defensively. I believe Pioli should have started with Florenzi since you are facing Ribery on the right side.

  3. This coach will never the lesion neither win any trophy as his personality obvious in his team players and their reaction we lost the championship last year and we are going to do so this year which I hope not as it’s big scandal if Inter will win the second star or 20th championship on expense of Milan by coach whom he is an Inter fan …. Pioli is made to be a loser note that I am taking about facing salerntina and Spizia

  4. this is.. when celebrating a derby that big, which we should have lost 4-0
Talking about scudetto although we are the only ones who have NOT strengthened the team.
    get the bill presented 😉
