CorSport: Pioli considering two new formations as defence and attack struggle

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan ended the month of March without a single win and dropped more points in the top four race, so Stefano Pioli is again thinking about a formation change.

Today’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) report that Pioli is thinking of returning to the 4-2-3-1 formation that helped win the Scudetto last season, because the current three-man defence is yielding too little from an attacking point of view.

The Rossoneri have scored just three goals in their last four games yet they have conceded six in three so the solidity has vanished, and that has led the coach to reflect again on a change of system.

The 4-2-3-1 formation is one the players already know well but the Milan coach could also try a 4-3-3 where Sandro Tonali, Ismael Bennacer and Rade Krunic would be deployed simultaneously in midfield while Rafael Leao, Olivier Giroud and Alexis Saelemaekers or Ante Rebic could be used from the start in attack.

The four-man defence would also lead to the return of captain Davide Calabria, excluded in the last few games with the three-man defensive set-up.

  1. I don’t usually get caught up with formations but I hate 433. It’s the most rigid thing in the world. And so predictable.

The way our full backs play could mix things up but I’d prefer 4231. It worked before. We just need to refind our mojo.

  2. 433 is the best formation for this team and we have the players that can play it. Now we will see better use of Pobega, Adli, Vranckx and Bakayoko.

The real question is why is taking Pioli so long to use this formation given the midfielders that we currently have in squad?

In football a coach has to use the formation that best suits the players he has in the squad that way he can get the best out of the every player.

I don’t understand why a coach would force players to adapt to a position that is not best suited for them or doesn’t bring out their strengths and then wonder why the player or players underperform. Smh

  3. To me I consider 4-2-3-1 is a formation Milan players can use well to attack and destroy opponent with high pressing ability. Only with a right starting line up bt Milan can play with 4-3-3 is good bt to me I prefer the 4-2-3-1 formation

  4. Its too clear to see what formation will best suit the team. But Just forget about Pioli changing anything. He can never really depart from 4-2-3-1. The man wrote thesis on this. The 3-4-2-1 was just the same formation in disguise.
