CM: Pioli seriously thinking of 4-4-2 system as he waits for a playmaker – the XI in mind

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli is waiting to see which attacking midfielder will arrive, but in the meantime he is considering an alternative formation too.

According to Calciomercato.com, Pioli has been left pleased by what he has seen from Olivier Giroud so far, with the striker having signed from Chelsea last month. The French centre-forward scored the equaliser in Saturday night’s friendly match in Nice, which was his debut for the club.

Having arrived from England to be the deputy to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the hypothesis has now emerged that the pair could in fact play together at the same time. It would be an experienced pairing as they are close to 35 and 40 respectively, but both are very strong and useful.

The report adds that Josip Ilicic of Atalanta, Nikola Vlasic of CSKA Moscow and Hakim Ziyech of Chelsea are the main candidates to arrive and replace Hakan Calhanoglu. In the meantime, the Rossoneri coach Pioli is thinking of a 4-4-2 as a formation to be used possibly during a game.

The XI hypothesised is as follows: Maignan; Calabria, Kjaer, Tomori, Theo Hernandez; Saelemaekers, Kessié, Bennacer, Rebic; Giroud, Ibrahimovic.

  1. I can’t see Giroud and Ibra playing together, even in a 4-4-2. To me, would make more sense for the second striker to be Rebic or Leao to increase mobility and ability to press.
