CorSport: Pioli deserves credit for changing formation in a delicate moment

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli chose to ditch the three-man defence for yesterday night’s game against Napoli, and it very much paid dividends.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan), Pioli made the call over the international break to move away from playing with three centre-backs to using a well-tested formation like the 4-2-3-1 which has almost always brought results and good performance.

He did so on the most delicate occasion: the first of three encounters against future Italian champions Napoli. However, the Rossoneri ripped up the script with a devastating performance at the Maradona.

Rafael Leao was back to his best in his favoured position, Rade Krunic supported Sandro Tonali and Ismael Bennacer in midfield with the Algerian midfielder in particular stopping Lobotka from dictating the tempo.

Napoli president De Laurentiis was the subject of protests before and during the game which pretty much set the tone for their night. They simply never got going and were well beaten by Milan on the night, but there are two more chances to hit back in the Champions League.
