Pioli says formation change for Milan against Verona is ‘out of necessity’

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli has said that the team has switched to a 3-4-3 formation against Verona because he was left with no choice.

A number of players are out with injuries and, speaking to DAZN ahead of the game (via Milan News), the coach named Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria as the two that have primarily led to this switch in shape.

“It changes out of necessity, unfortunately neither Calabria nor Theo are available. They both have the same injury, they suffered blows to the muscle and have not recovered. So it changes but it doesn’t change how we want to be on the pitch. Then it’s clear that it’s not an easy match because Verona has quality,” Pioli said.

On the attacking choices

“It is a question of who is better off playing today.”

On Musah starting

“I’m lucky enough to have many starters: many games are played in a few days, there is the possibility of being used for everyone, some from the start and some as subs. It is very important to maintain or even improve the level of the team with changes.”

Do you expect an aggressive Verona?

“We will see. Usually yes, usually aggressive. We have to be very careful in their restarts.”

  1. “They both have the same injury, they suffered blows to the muscle and have not recover”
    Called it lol
I knew it had to be injuries because Pioli will run you to the ground before even thinking about a sub

I dont get how this is a necessity. Why didn’t he ask for subs for the full back role when the market was open knowing he doesn’t have his desired replacements. They scream we have depth this year but yet from the first injury to a full back, we have to change the whole formation !?!?!?!. Sorry this doesn’t make sense.

  2. Well
This excuse doesn’t make sense & it is disappointing because I thought he changed system to mirror verona’s but saying injury forced him doesn’t make any sense.
Florenzi could play the rw & we have a youngester who played all the preseason games but then again, everyone already knew Pioli was never going to give him any chance during the season as he did with Adli.
We have so much quality players now that we shouldn’t start complaining if one or 2 is missing.
I am just worried that Pioli is going to end up never playing some thereby ruining their careers

  3. How about Florenzi and Bartesaghi starting in a back 4? So don’t say you were left with no choice. You’re just not courageous enough.

And “I’m lucky enough to have many starters”
Who are these many starters ? Giroud ,Giroud Krunic ,Giroud and Giroud ? Clueless

  4. Musah was a starter at a big club like Valencia for a long time; so I think he’s referring to having someone with quality and experience on his bench who he can start. It’s better to go with someone who is proven than someone who is not. We need the 3 points at home. Also, with no Maignan, it’s more defensive and protecting our keeper more to play 3 in the back in his first start for Milan.

  5. Pioli out, he lost his head on formation and tactic. Same mistake and is more his insanatiy on player changes, giroud, pulisic played poorly and they should be replaced on early second half, amazingly pobega replaced pulisic, while chukuweze is available.
Pioli lost his courage after devastated defeat by Inter, which all his fault to not learnt from mistake and did suicide mission. Milan palyed like mid or bottom table team, just tried to protect 1 0 score.
    I am speechless
