Pioli discusses future and labels Torino defeat ‘the symbol of our season’

By Isak Möller -

Following the disappointing defeat against Torino, Stefano Pioli spoke to the media and shared his thoughts on AC Milan’s performance. He admitted that the performance was the ‘symbol’ of what has gone wrong this season.

Pioli decided to give some of the reserves a chance from start this evening, such as Filippo Terracciano, and Torino thus fancied themselves. Even though Milan seemed to have control at times in the first half, they conceded twice due to very poor defending. ‘

After the game, as cited by MilanNews, Pioli spoke to Sky Italia and discussed what went wrong for the Rossoneri. He also stated that he will meet with the management, though it has not been decided whether this will be before or after the next game.

On the match…

“Even if the result was a bit too much, we were careless in the first half and they punished us. They won more duels, they were more determined and attentive in certain situations which directed the match.”

On the level of the squad…

“We were the best of the ‘normal ones’ this year because there is a team that did something extraordinary [Inter]. We did better than the others. Today we could have done more, but it’s not a question of the reserves, today Torino put something more on the pitch than us.”

On his emotions…

“The next one will be the last league match and then we will see. We have been talking about my future for too many months, the team has been good because it’s not easy to follow the coach in this situation.”

On his difficulties…

“The group has always been compact and cohesive. We had difficulties, Inter did something extraordinary, we had a good season. The regret is Europe, first the exit from the Champions League and then the exit against Roma in the Europa League. I’m experiencing everything with great balance and attention. Some things didn’t weigh on me, I went on my way.”

On attack and defence…

“Tonight’s match, from a defensive point of view, is the symbol of our season: we gave them four chances and conceded three goals. We have conceded too many goals this year.”

On criticism and the future…

“We had a difficult situation around us, finishing the league in second place. I don’t have any appointments scheduled with the club. We always met at the end of the season, I don’t know whether we will see each other before or after Salernitana. I haven’t spoken to any other team, I have too much respect for Milan and the fans. I’m not thinking about the future, I’ll think about it when the time comes.”

The final game of the season is up next, with Salernitana travelling to San Siro, and it’s yet to be confirmed if it will be played on Saturday or Sunday. In any case, it would be nice to close out the season with a win, even if it doesn’t matter that much.

  1. I have been one of your stout critics! Then with time I realize there is no point expecting a G-wagon to perform like a Ferrari! As much as you aren’t a top level coach, you have exhausted all your skills, talents and experiences and this is the highest you could go….so, Milan needs a higher level coach worthy of its heritage! It’s time to go so we can aim higher…

  2. He seemed resigned on his fate, the level of the team…he seems defeated…almost accepting that the team was what it was and he tried everything…what a shame to go out like this. I have a feeling this team will be called out next season when they do not have a so called midtier coach to hide behind…

      1. Quiet, Anti-Milan fan
People like you who simp for fodder players and managers are the reason Milan has not won a CL since 2007

        1. Yeah. I’m to blame for Milan’s last 15 odd years of UCL performance.
That’s it, you stick your head in the sand and blame other fans. Rather than acknowledging the reality that Serie is not on the same playing field as EPL, Real, Barca and Bayern in terms of resources.

Pioli has frustrated the f**k out of me at times. But he still deserves some acknowledgement for what he has achieved with limited resources in his time. Rather than being insulted like than. Focus on constructive criticism rather than abuse.

The way they abandoned him is quite sad. I feel for him in that regard. And they would never fire him during the season because then he who cannot be named would have been correct in wanting to replace him and it would mean admitting he was right. It’s quite obvious.

    1. Remember when they fired Maldini and gave pioli ‘more power’ in selection of the players… Oh how that has backfired. What’s even worse is that although we got many players in the summer, they all somewhat proved to be useful good players, some undisputed starters. But it was the tactics that hurt us the most. I didn’t want to be right but I said that the 4 3 3 formation would only last a few games and although we got better with the 4 2 3 1 the constant players out of position and tactics hurt us way too much.

      1. Fener offered us like 10 millions in August for Krunic
The Inter agent that is Pioli sabotaged us by keeping him and then Fener got him from us for like 2 millions or something in January

Anyone who roots for Pioli is Anti-Milan
        Period

      2. @Milanellofm absolutely 100%
The impression that 433 wouldn’t work was there all the way back especially after preseason where there wasn’t anything innovative in the approach to that formation and that we’d go back to the 4231.

    2. As much as I think Milan should look for a new coach (perhaps even for a while), I agree with this. The coach and the team were abandoned by the management and also by a portion of the fans since pretty much the end of the first leg against Roma.
      It’s quite disgraceful.

      1. I’m neither here or there on hiring a new coach. But there are so many ways they could have gone about it. They could have at least pretend that they’re not looking for a coach or publicly support him while doing whatever they want in the background or announce early that he’s going to leave at the end of the season or for him and have a caretaker 🤷‍♂️

  4. The way kalulu and tomori play was horrible.. the squad its only for league not UCL level but we already at 2nd place and thats UCL spot. Well, pioli should stay one more season. The target from the management with limited budget already done !! can we expect more than this for the new manager ?? Haha..

    1. The new coach won’t even make top 2… neither can he win the league in his first season…

Just invest in right position with quality players and let pioli finish his tenor with honor.

He has given us the fan and club so much to dream of before now Milan is nothing to write bout or to even watch asa football team

  5. Right Marcell. The target already over achieved. The target is qualifying for champion league, Pioli give second in league.

We should keep Pioli because he is moneyball coach, who give management much profit by qualifying for champion league.

    1. ’’We should keep Pioli because he is moneyball coach’’

You should change your name to Inter Fan

    1. Agree Milan Fan. If we go to Conte, get ready foe huge mercato budget and heavy practice on the training. That is the way winninf mentality but milan player these day not ready for that…

  6. Many of you are not paying attention to details, you just want to banish Pioli and criticise him.. Yes he has is own portion that affect the while season.

But here he is indirectly pointing out to the management buy saying the defeat to Torino is the symbol of the season.. the management refuse to reinforce the defense and also failed to upgrade the midfield.. no matter who they appoint as the coach if the right players and positions are not well upgrade Milan will continie to be in the crisis.

Milan lose too many league matches cuz Pioli try to rotate the squad inbetween the leage and UEFA but the reserve team the management provide for him are scraps…

After Torino match i believe most of you see reason Terecciano or whatever his name his is just a waste. And reason Pioli dont give him playing time. Same goes to While jovic can’t always start and why Pobegba is not of Milan level. But the management only care bout cheap players

    1. Exactly this! I recall Pioli saying we lost technical quality right after Tonali left.
We lost in midfield which is the engine of the team. We have no engine basically

  7. Agree Milan Fan. If we go to Conte, get ready foe huge mercato budget and heavy practice on the training. That is the way winninf mentality but milan player these day not ready for that…
