Pioli addresses injury crisis and admits Dortmund were ‘better and smarter’

By Isak Möller -

After the disappointing defeat to Borussia Dortmund, Stefano Pioli shared his thoughts with the media. AC Milan’s chances of reaching the Round of 16 are not looking good, and the manager knows they are left needing a miracle to qualify.

After conceding an early penalty, following a penalty miss of their own, Milan got back into the game thanks to a lovely goal from Samuel Chukwueze. He stepped right when the Rossoneri needed it and for a long time, a second goal was in the air too.

However, Stefano Pioli was dealt another injury as Malick Thiaw had to be replaced by Rade Krunic, and that’ when things fell apart. Speaking to Mediaset after the game (via MilanNews), the manager provided his outlook on yet another tough night.

Milan will face Newcastle in the final round and winning that clash will not be enough for qualification. The Rossoneri will also have to rely on the already-qualified Dortmund to beat Paris Saint-German at home. In short, the situation is far from ideal.

“I think we lost it when we could direct it, but we lost it when we missed a 3-on-1 counterattack. Thiaw changed our defensive balance. In the moments where we had to go above and beyond, our opponents were better and smarter than us,” he said.

“It’s clear that it was a disappointing evening. We had a great opportunity and it weighs on us that we didn’t succeed. We have a duty to go to Newcastle and try to win. We have a small chance and we’ll go there to play for it.”

On the injury situation: “It’s worrying, they too had some difficulties. They play too much. Then Malick was having a great game, but then it becomes difficult to replace.”

A message the fans: “It’s difficult to find the words, I don’t think the fans need my words. We have to do better.”

On the chances of getting through: “We have one chance: to win in Newcastle. Of course it doesn’t depend on us.”

  1. This is a crap. “Our opponents were smarter and better than us” a because you didn’t do you job and not prepare team. 2 wins in last 8 games. Just go away

    1. Somehow, our opponents are always smarter than us. Maybe we should create a new department called “smartness” which takes care of making us smarter.

Also, obviously it is nothing to do with Pioli as he is the only one “smart” person in our club.

  2. Pioli time is definitely over and in fact it was over after Inter defeat
“Dortmund were better and smarter “
    Now they should sack him!

  3. The balance changed when you decided to play krunic as a defender. Not krunic’s fault when you could have easily put Calabria in the middle and brought on florenzi. Each passing game you make me dislike everything you do more and more.

  4. Time for pioli to go. He talks about this injuries like they come from bad luck. Him and his staff are responsible for these muscle injuries. Lack of rotation, lack of proper training, and diet etc. Also tactics, since pioli’s only tactic is to win by someone’s individual brilliance not as a group effort. Just leave already baldy.
I hope management have already a replacement for this moron. If he stays WE WILL NOT EVEN REACH TOP 4 AT THE END OF THE SEASON.

    1. It’s 100% certain those injuries aren’t “bad luck”. They’re clearly the sum of many things done the wrong way. And the lack of rotation is the key issue here. And whose fault is that?

  5. Ohh c’mon, time to get rid of this man. Napoli sacked Rudi Garcia and they get back in form. Management needs to react quickly or we can end outside top 4 in the league

  6. Thank you Captain obvious, we need to bow out off CL. With Napoli and Inter in, it does give us a better chance in Serie A. Right now grasping at straws……any straw.

    1. Its better to spend to get a better coach, rather than keep spending on more and more players or wait until a good coach is available, good coaches are rarely available unless they are coming out of a bad period, I would spend big to get RDZ out of his contract, and give him the current exact squad and the primavera players rather than go out and buy more players for pioli, pioli did well, we will never forget him

  7. Resigning is more elegant than waiting for you to be FIRED., YOU are the STUPID as the Head Coach, not the smarter opponent., You have to be RESPONSIBLE PIOLI..!!!

  8. On the injury situation..”They play too much.” Wait what??? Who’s playing them? 🤣🤣🤣I think Pioli should ask the coach why he plays them too much, oh wait
