Pioli names areas where Kalulu and Leao can improve but praises ‘evident’ growth

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli praised the growth of Rafael Leao and Pierre Kalulu, who have very much become part of the Rossoneri’s exciting young core.

Kalulu’s performances this season are the best answer to those who doubted the value of the Rossoneri scouts, as it was Geoffrey Moncada and his assistants who spotted a player who had never made a senior appearance for Lyon. He has already played as a right-back, a centre-back and a left-back, showing his immense versatility.

Pioli spoke to the media who gathered at Milanello for his pre-match press conference and he was asked about Kalulu’s performances this season, with his comments transcribed by MilanNews.

“His growth is evident, he always takes the field with personality. He has to improve a lot, he arrived last year without ever having played in the first team. He has to improve above all how to position himself, for a defender it is decisive. He can play more roles, this is positive,” he said.

Pioli was also asked about Rafael Leao, who should be back in the starting line-up after being rested for the last two games. He is another vital cog in Milan’s machine as he is now in his third season with the Rossoneri.

“The path is right, he wants to improve. He must have greater presence and malice in the penalty area, he must play with conviction and strength. He must attack the goal more.”
