Pioli: Milan aim to play ‘proactive, attacking and beautiful football’; the path ‘started in January’

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has claimed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is right to think about the Scudetto, insisting the ‘path started’ earlier in 2020.

Milan are top of the Serie A table by three points after 11 games and they remain unbeaten, having racked up eight wins in that period, which has some fans dreaming that this team could do the unthinkable.

Ibrahimovic has played a big part in the transformation, and at the age of 39 he is currently the top scorer in Serie A with 10 goals from six appearances. He was presented with the ‘Legend’ award at the Gazzetta Sports Awards, going on to say in his acceptance speech that winning the league is a realistic target.

Pioli won the best coach of 2020 at the same awards, and he responded to the words of his striker upon picking up the trophy, with his words conveyed by TMW.

“Zlatan is right to think like this and my players too. Reality says that Milan have not been in the Champions League for a long time, our goal is to bring Milan back to where it deserves to be,” he said.

“The path started in January with Ibrahimovic, Kjaer, Saelemaekers. We changed our way of being on the pitch, the results gave us self-esteem and then we passed the step of winning with Juventus and other important teams. It gave us confidence and strength, in quality.”

On the comparisons with Milan teams of the past: “We are similar in our desire to play proactive, attacking and beautiful football. We have young people but there are people with personalities, we must have courage and enthusiasm which are our best qualities.”
