Pioli insists Milan ‘will have to be as compact as possible’ against Inter

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has insisted that his side must seize the opportunities they are given by Inter, against a side that plays compact and looks to counter.

Milan will contest the first derby of the season against Inter at San Siro this evening hoping to continue their winning start to the season and simultaneously end a run of four defeats in this fixture, extending back to the start of 2023.

However, it will be an even tougher test than the Roma game before the international break as Inter have won all three games too and have not conceded a goal in the process, while the Rossoneri lost each of their last four games against their city rivals without scoring.

Pioli named just one change to the starting line-up and it was forced given the problems at centre-back. He was interviewed by DAZN just a few minutes before the game against the Nerazzurri, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

Were you able to convey confidence and awareness to the players?

“There’s no need, the boys know what they have to do. They know that it is an important match but that we have to play according to our characteristics, according to our playing principles. We need a high-level match to leave the pitch satisfied.”

How do you score against Inter?

“We play against a very compact and organised team that always concedes very little. We will have to be very good at exploiting the opportunities we have because I don’t think there will be many.”

How will you organise yourselves in the defensive phase?

“The defensive phase depends on the work of the whole team, above all it depends on the intensity and timing of the players playing in front. Pulisic, Leao and Giroud will be very important for the out balls they will give us, we will have to be as compact as possible.”
